I'm against most of that stuff. Tolkien hated that kind of stuff and I share his own sentiment. I've refused to buy any of the movie merchandise aside from the movies themselves.

I may soften this for a few truly quality products. (I so want Narsil/Anduril and Sting)

As for Tolkien's views towards that kind of stuff, Stormbringer; IIRC, Tolkien did want to at least work with Hollywood, according to some of his letters. It's not like Tolkien didn't want anything to be done with his books, as some people (including his estate) have suggested. Not that I'm accusing you, just making the point.

I agree with that. He was willing to see his vision (if done properly) to go up on the big screen. Tolkien himself objected strenuously to anything that would cheapen it. His estate likewise had a problem with the merchandising more than the movies themselves. In fact rumor hads suggested Christopher and others are pleased with them.

Really, I heard that Christopher was initially opposed to the Peter Jackson Project. I can see why he changed his mind, though.

He was vehemently opposed to it. Mostly because he, like every Tolkienite, feared a typically bad Hollywood movie. He's still pissed at the merchandising but is supposedly pleased with the films themselves.

It has been kind of over-commercialized. But not to the extent of TPM. Though, I wish I had the money to buy some of the swords, like Narsil, and some of the other ones. Just like I wish I could afford the replicas of the lightsabers from SW.

What I loved about Peter Jackson's movies is that while they had (or will have, for the two not out yet) all the marketing and merchandising of your typical Hollywood blockbuster, they did not betray Tolkien's vision at all (other than POSSIBILY the substitution of Glorfindel for Arwen, but when you think about it that's a nitpick).

They haven't made a Narsil yet! At least not an official Narsil. I think they're not going to until they actually show Anduril onscreen and whole.

As long as the quality of the movie isn't sacrificed for the commercialisation of the film franchise (as RoTJ was, with the Ewoks), who gives a damn? Let them make as much money as they want off of it, they deserve it.

I can't agree with that. I find most of the merchandising tacky and shameless. It's like making Shakespeare action figures, tasteless. I'll support some of the most tasteful and quailty merchandise but nothing else. I won't partcipate in the shameless whoring of a classic novel for cash.

I heard it was in the works. Probably be released after TTT or ROTK.

Actually, come to think of it, I'm going to have to retract my statement and agree with you, because I just remembered some of the particularly tacky LoTR related promotions (Burger King Glass Goblets? what the hell...).

That's what I figured too. It makes sense since Narsil hasn't been reforged yet. So far it's just Sting and Gimli's axe. I don't think the axe looks like a proper Dwarven axe but I WANT Sting, bad!

Exactly! Some of it's just shamless cash whoring. I want no part of that shit.

Will they even be showing Anduril onscreen? IIRC, in the book Anduril was forged and give to Aragorn shortly before the departure of the Fellowship from Rivendell. I would think that we'd have seen it by now.

They will, my guess is we'll see it in this movie or the next. It all depends on when Arwen shows up. I think it'll turn in the scene where Aragorn is present the gifts from Elrond's sons and the rest of the Rangers show up. Probably late in Two Towers or Return of the King. I seroiusly doubt Peter Jackson would fuck up something like that, especially after showing the shards of Narsil.

The blade is dull as hell, for obvious reasons, with a slightly sharp tip. I'm no expert in these matters, but the metal seemed to be of fairly high quality to me. It's a nicely-made piece.

The blades should be stainless steel, 420 I think. Remember, they are show pieces so they aren't going to be made of carbon steel. They also I think have false edges, though the tip should be kinda sharp.
