The USAS-12 and similar magazine fed auto-shotguns are nasty things, not that the trusty SPAS-12 or Benelli and Remington pump-actions aren't useful still. The military just needs some models with the ability to fire off a dozen rounds in under 5 seconds for some reason.

Interesting (or not so) datum: Remington at one time hat a fully automatic tubular magazine shotgun. The 7188.
Or so I'm told.

Actually, not too likely as they would've undoubtedly used a piece of rope as a rudimentary lifeline. That, and unless they were firing while leaning out at a really wonky angle, the recoil wouldn't do much more than shove them back against the mast. But yes, setting the rigging on fire was a real concern... especially since much of it was coated with pitch to weatherproof it. What many people don't realize about old sailing ships was that they were literal firetraps; stray sparks did for many a boat back in the day.

Yes, or got press-ganged into it, in which case there'd more than likely be a Royal Marine at the bottom of the mast, with an equally big gun ready to use on you if you didn't do as you were told.

Exactly. Besides Nelson's policy was not to put muskets in the masts, and he influenced a good number of the officers in the fleet.
