Arnold Vs Teachers Unions

These are just a couple of the many many articles of Schwarzenegger’s. I am personally glad some one is taking a stand against the Teachers Unions. (Which get in the way of real reform of California Schools.)

It's about fucking time someone tried to do something about the California education system. It's a huge drain on public funds, yet continues to produce sub-standard students.

Sounds like he's in some hot water for originally trying to cut death benefits for cops & firemen killed in the line of duty, though .... his winning streak with the legislature seems to be over.

For some reason teachers' unions protect bad teachers, especially ones who are universally despised and/or lack a good understanding of what they teach. They oppose tests of basic competence! I want to know how they can do this sort of thing so blatantly and still be able to live with themselves, let alone have public support.

The claim that the California educational system turns out substandard students is not refuted by the existence of a few exceptional students.

I come from the California school system as well, but I was lucky enough to go to Clovis Unified. It is one of the best examples of how a Public school system should be run. (Also one of the very few school districts without a Union, or a PTA.) It gets less money per student than the California average, yet 70% of its students are at or above Grade Level. Its administration per student is 1/3 of the California average, so the money actually goes back to the students. (Imagine that!!) The district is becoming more and more strict when hiring teachers, which other schools cannot (Due to the Teachers Union.) Finally, one of the biggest points, teachers are allowed to create thier own curriculum. This year, 6 schools are considered Californias best public schools. I am so glad finally some one will stand up to them.

Maybe I am coming from a very Anti-Teachers Union POV, but I see them as one of the biggest reasons why California (And the US) Educational system is failing. It is not the only reason, just a major one.

Please note, I am not against all Unions, but Unions and government do not mix well.

I grew up through the California public education system, too, and I can tell you that the state that it's in disgusts me. Governor Davis' spending policies were just ludicrous because they did nothing to treat the disease that is the Teachers' Unions and they did nothing to assist students directly.

Question: was Schwarzenegger elected because of his policies, or because he's the Terminator? 8)

Teachers' unions all over the continent sell the same story: meet our demands and the students will benefit. Unfortunately, there seems to be no evidence that caving into teacher union demands does jack shit for the quality of education. So yeah, I'd say that the teacher unions need to be brought down a peg. One of their immutable demands (job security and pay based on seniority rather than merit) is common to all unions and is a serious problem everywhere, but it is a public problem when the public is paying the bills.

Correction, all over the World. A VERY much badly needed reform of Israeli education is being held back by threats of strikes.
Teachers should not be considered "Just another job", but rather like police officers and firemen, as vital parts of society, and should be held to higher standerds.

I am optimistic about Schwarzenegger's attempts to reform schools. As of now in my home district there is NO funding for music in elementary schools, and I think that's a shame. IF he can cut the fat, maybe they can come back.

Man this guy takes no shit.

I mean its one of the best things to happen to Americann politics recently IMO. This guy has a HUGE popularity base to draw support from, so he doesn't have to play the party games. THEY have to support HIM or he simply ignores them. He won't take crap from anyone and he has a relativly centered viewpoint, able to step both left and right quite easily.

He also doesn't take shit from people, he has the ability to take his case directly to the people....

Its too bad he (so far) can't become President....

I miss Mike Harris: He was no Governator, but he didn't take any shit from the teacher's unions either. Now, here's a little story about the mindset of some of these teachers: one day back when my sister was in second grade, her teacher spent an entire period telling the class a one-sided rant of what a stupid evil bastard Mike Harris was, and from what I gather no schoolwork was done during that period. Later, many of the kids from that class started parroting parts of this rant to friends and parents. Of course this wasn't too long before the teachers went on strike protesting Bill 160, a strike which IIRC was illegal.

Man, I love the Governator, and I'm all the way on the other side of the country. The best part, I think, is that when he was running everyone (including myself) was like "Ha ha, the Governator, ha ha. He's gonna win but he's gonna be so bad at his job." And now everyone is like "Woah... uh... so about that thing that only lets native borns be president..." :D

Teachers Unions are such bullshit. In fact, education systems in general are such bullshit (slightly OT rant: my father, an award-winning Ph.D-holding professor who has taught history for nearly 20 years, including stints at the best university in Japan, is not qualified to teach high-school history because he hasn't passed a "General Education" course).

One of the more annoying aspects about Fat Eddy Rendell, Gov'ner of PA, is that he has done little with the Teacher's Unions that got him elected (thank you, machine politics).
