Good freeware games
Good games are rarely free, but sometimes you find a gem. Let's share our favorites.
C-dogs
http://www.orcsoftware.com/~ronny/C-Dogs.html
A 3rd person shooter. Fairly primitive but fun nonetheless. A campaign editor is included but I don't know how to use it.
Crazy Cows
http://come.to/runttime
A turn-based tactical game. You control a small unit of cows with the goal of eliminating the other side. It comes with a mission editor that is easy and fun to use. The ai is dumb as a brick, so you might have to make massively lopsided scenarios to get a challenge.
Roguelikes have taken up more of my time the above two put together. They have lousy features compared to most modern games but make up for that in gameplay. The two listed below both have their own newsgroups.
Adom
http://adom.de/
This was my introduction to roguelikes. Adom is one of the most complicated roguelikes, along with Nethack and Omega (which I haven't played). There is a complex storyline and multiple ways to win. Unfortunately the game is tough on new players, making it difficult to start. Most consider spoilers necessary in order to gain any amount of success. I have never won this game without cheating, but I have come very close.
Angband
http://thangorodrim.net/
A pure dungeon crawl. Fairly straightforward and mostly about equipment optimisation. Elements of this game have reportedly appeared in the popular game Diablo. Angband takes a long time to master and there are a multitude of variants for when the original loses its luster. I've never come close to winning Vanilla, but I did achieve victory with a heavily abusive character in one of the variants.

SubSpace
www.subspacehq.com - hmm, seems to be down at the moment.
Offending link deleted
SubSpace is a game orginally developed commercially, but now run by the players since the game's owners went bust. It's a top-down Asteroids-like shoot-em-up, but played across the internet on massive maps that often host as many as fifty or sixty other oppenents. There are several "zones," each with variations on settings that can lead to the Capture-The-Flag style games of Warzone, one-shot-kill zones like Trench Wars, the soccer-style game of Powerball, or the melee that is Chaos Zone. Differant zones emphasise teamwork and individual skill.

SOLDAT!!!!!!!!!
You will play Soldat. Soldat owns you. You will have Soldat's children.
Also, A really good game that I like is Hell Fighter. It's a developmental nightmare, but I'm a big fan of the Star Control 3 combat style, for some unusual 2-D reason. As long as you get the pre-networked version, I like it. Quite fun. It's at...umm... www.dracova.com/hellfighter as I recall.

Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.
Egoboo is a good game. Development of new levels has been slowed down though.
Subspace's developers have been bought by Sony and have made an online game called infantry, which unfortunately is now pay2play
. It was a pretty good game though. Damn Sony.

If you vana be somewhat safer get spyware blaster.
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
How? By setting a "kill bit" for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the installation of any of them from a webpage. You can run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but you will never even get a "Yes/No" box popped up, asking you to install a spyware Active-X control (Internet Explorer will never download or run it!). All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine.
Quite good![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Yeah, I remember the fuss about that on the SS forums. They had Cosmic Rift as well, both p2p now, but I haven't heard anything about them since.Pu-239 wrote: Subspace's developers have been bought by Sony and have made an online game called infantry, which unfortunately is now pay2play. The original SubSpace, the one I described, is still going though, and most importantly is still free

Dink Smallwood
"Dink Smallwood is a humorous zelda-like isometric adventure/RPG produced and published by Robinson Technologies in 1997"
It's a fairly entertaining RPG and can be kinda funny too. The graphics are also decent, for a free game. And there are addons too that are pretty fun.

Castle of the Winds (originally shareware, now released as free by the author), look it up on google. Great CRPG, a bit old now. Completely 2D.
Freeciv - basically a Civ 2 clone, that's mulitplayer. Turnbased goodness.

And Hack(1985) is only the first roguelike if you don't count Rogue(1980) or Moria(1983).

Rogue is Rogue, not a roguelike. (I've played it, too, and I think I got to about level 15 thanks to my Nethack experienceRaxmei wrote:I actually have played a little Nethack, just not enough to have any real experience with it.
