Annoying Game Bosses
GRR!!!
After a four month hiatus, I have managed to get back into Metroid Prime 2 since I never played it long enough to beat it. Don't get me wrong. I love the game. The Prime series is one of the best games you can play.
However, my current situation has brought about this thread. Annoying bosses and the gamers who have to fight them.
I am currently up against the Boost Ball Gaurdian. Not only can you NOT hurt this guy unless he's in warrior fashion, but when he's not boosting around the arena your in, he's an unattackable blob that damages you when it touches you. On top of the that, there are inglets that swarm around the same way, and get more numerous as his energy wears down. All this, and it's in Dark Aether with no light crystals. Only source of energy comes from inglets and the power stations in the room.
The biggest problem, is while your taking attack damage from the guardian, your getting multiple attacks from the inglets, not to mention power loss from Dark Aether itself.
GRRR!!! I spent an hour fighting that guy and couldn't beat him. I think I came close, but close ain't good enough. This is just one of many boss battles in my gaming career that just make me throw my controller down. In a game, a boss should be challenging. However, they shouldn't have whack ass game mechanics helping them along, and it's a sheer amount of luck to beat them.
So what are other game bosses you've fought that were annoying and/or cheap?

most of the bosses in Xenogears. they were either complete pushovers or insanely difficult. especially the first boss you go up against after you retrieve the gear in the caverns. damned near impossible to defeat without doing alot of insane leveling up beforehand.
alternatively, the ninja in metal gear solid was a pain in the ass the first time around. once you learned the trick to defeating him, it was cake.

I can't remember the guys name, but I think it was Torrv or something from Jedi Knight Outcast. Had some sort of fucking robot suit on, and I could for the life of me figure it out. I even thumbed through the strategy guide and it was the shittiest boss I think I've come across.

another that comes to mind is the last boss of Omega Boost. i'd swear it's impossible to beat the fucker in the time limit they specify. i spent at least a week trying to beat that bitch.

Admiral Galak Fyyar you mean? He was a real pushover once you figured the shield thing out.Cal Wright wrote:I can't remember the guys name, but I think it was Torrv or something from Jedi Knight Outcast. Any boss, particularly in an RPG, that you can't beat simply because the story wills it.
The most transparently awful version of this is the first fight with Malak in KOTOR. I had schooled him, nearly killing him in one turn, and then the story took over and Bastila decided she needed to 'save' me.
If developers can't think of a reliable and competent way for their plot development to proceed, they should write something else.

Not because it's hard... in fact it's the opposite problem....
Yu Yevon in Final Fantasy X. Ok, so we have a final boss in an FF game. With pitiful HP, weak attacks and my characters have permanet Auto-Life? Umm... Why isn't this a cutscene again? And of course I lost all my summons so instakilling the little insignificant bug with a Mega Flare isn't an option either. And it self heals.
That has to be the most pointless boss battle ever. I don't really mind the "you can't win" style battles. At least they're a lot better than the slow "you couldn't lose, even if you tried" battles.

Oh, the boss from DoA3 comes to mind. He's got a lightsaber, can't be thrown or countered. Also, if you knocked him into the air, he let out some kind of shockwave that would send you flying to the edge of the ring. At which point he will use the shockwave again or use the unblockable flamethrower attack.
Don't forget that the screen is all distorted and fucked up when you fight him, unless I'm thinking of the wrong DoA game.Losonti Tokash wrote:Oh, the boss from DoA3 comes to mind. Some of the later bosses in X-men legends are a royal pain in the ass. Marrow the second time around and the "dark" versions of the Brotherhood of Mutants members in the Astral Plain spring to mind. If you have to do something to make the boss vulnerable or stay dead, then fine, but at least drop a decent hint. I can't solve puzzles while I'm trying to stay alive.
"I want to mow down a bunch of motherfuckers with absurdly large weapons and relative impunity - preferably in and around a skyscraper. Then I want to fight a grim battle against the unlikely duo of the Terminator and Robocop. The last level should involve (but not be limited to) multiple robo-Hitlers and a gorillasaurus rex."--Uraniun235 on his ideal FPS game

Probably. At the very least, it does that with the DoA2 boss until you hit him. Then it becomes clear again for some reason until he starts kicking your ass again.Trogdor wrote:Don't forget that the screen is all distorted and fucked up when you fight him, unless I'm thinking of the wrong DoA game.Losonti Tokash wrote:Oh, the boss from DoA3 comes to mind. The Cyclopoid Emperor from Duke Nukem 3D was just frustratingly hard to kill. Same goes for all the other bosses in that game (*cough* Battlelord).

To be fair, until you figured that out, you did get assraped by him. Though it was a disappointment, especially when considering the build-up for the 2 minutes it took to get to him, when you were expecting to be attacked the whole time, and the candles and moans and shit. And the awesome reveal cutscene.Losonti Tokash wrote:Yet another addition. The Cyberdemon from Doom3. What a huge fucking disappointment. You just run around killing maggots or imps until you launch the soul cube at him a few times and he's dead.
Incidentally, the fact that the Hellgate was a hole in the ground that demons crawled out of was a bit off-putting. And, couldn't they have just used either the teleporter on the small lava-surrounded island to get in via Delta Labs 5, or the teleporter in Delta Labs 4?

Final boss of Halo 2. Because it's a fucking anti-climax. A couple minutes of running around, and then *bang bang* "Is that it"?
Hell, you can trick him into killing himself.

Hell, I haven't even played Halo 2 and that 'spoiler' didn't surprise me one bit. The only Bungie game I've played with traditional "bosses" is Oni.

Heh. As soon as I saw the thread title I thought Boost Guardian. Anyway, the key to the Boost Guardian is Light Beam. Charged and lots of it. Presumably, you know that bombs will dirupt the guardian's boost charge.
I nominate the Dahaka in PoP: Warrior Within. Little bitch's attacks are unblockable, and he'll regenerate half his life bar 2/3 of the way into the fight. The only reliable way to beat him is to abuse the hell out of your Ravages of Time power. Even then its not a guaranteed victory.

You poor bastard: they same boss has made me stop playing MP2. It even cheats: I knocked it down to 0 health (bar totally empty), so it turns into sludge and won't turn back no matter how much I bombed it. A full minute of frantic dodging and bombing later, and I'll never play that fucked up game again.
Those SNK bosses (I'm thinking Goose) were so damn cheesy.

Yeah, Soulblighter. He can be killed by the Journeyman's healing ability, or by massed berserks. Also, of course, it's not necessary to kill him, only to throw Balor's head into the Great Devoid.Tzeentch wrote:Myth also had a final boss, iirc, though I never got to him.Spacebeard wrote:A proud Bungie tradition of wimpy bosses, dating back to Marathon 1's Pfhor cyborg.DPDarkPrimus wrote:Final boss of Halo 2. You may also be referring to Balor himself, who was held immobile and powerless by Alric, allowing your units to move in and finish him off.
By the way, I'm not insulting Bungie here... they're among my favorite game developers, and abstaining from the traditional "boss level with one guy who is four times the size of normal enemies and has ONE FATAL WEAKNESS YOU MUST FIND" is one of their strengths.

Yoshi and Stark, for some reason I had both of you guys in mind while I was cussing the 'Cube. THe toughest part about the Light Beam is the fucking ammo. I wouldn't mind it being a bit weaker, just fucking cut the ammo. That's the only thing that irks me about that damn game. I have to use them to open doors. Retracing steps can be a bitch when I'm trying to conserve. I'm going to go try it again, and see if I can get it down. I'm determined to beat the game this week now.

Most annoying boss I can think of is Admiral Fyyar, from Star Wars: Dark Forces 3: Jedi Knight 2 - Jedi Outcast
He's got a shield, plus an imperial repeater rifle. The Lightsaber is pretty much the only way you'll disable the shield long enough to do damage. But if you get too close to the shield, it hurts you and knocks you back. You can hide up in the rafters in the shield generator room, but he can blow them up, especially when he uses the plasma grenade shots. Took me forever to figure out the trick to downing his shields. By comparison, the final boss is easy, though I think I just got lucky and killed him within ten seconds.
