Which is better Star Wars androids or Star Trek androids?
We have data and the soong androids vs. Guri and the other Human Replica Droids. Which are better, more advanced, more human, more capable? Does Star Wars own Trek yet again?

Re: Which is better Star Wars androids or Star Trek androids
Well it's next impossible to tell Guri apart from human (with everything but intense sensor scan(even that might be fooled)) ans some what stroger then a human (how much I don't know), there was Soong type (modeled after his wife) that was very Human like and even fooled some exams.Kartr_Kana wrote:We have data and the soong androids vs. Guri and the other Human Replica Droids. This is such a stupid comparison. StarTrek doesn't have Androids, it has Lore and Data, thats about it. On the other hand, StarWars has mostly Sentiant AI's perminating almost every level of their society

Well, technically this isn't Empire vs UFP but Trek vs Wars, so everything in-universe counts I'd say.Sharpshooter wrote:Do those count, though, considering that (I think) they were built by a group other than the Federation?Cpl Kendall wrote:Trek has those Androids on Mudds planet.

TOS:
The 'Mudd' Androids. While indistinguishable from humans, their weakness was the use of a central coordinating unit. On the plus side, there was the stated capability of transferring a human consciousness into an android body. It would seem sensible that such models would not be linked to the coordinating unit.
The 'Roger Corby' Androids. Again, we have the capability of creating a duplicate of a human, but the neural engram transferral process seems rather flimsy, since Kirk foiled it by repeating an uncharacteristic insult. The technology is essentially lost, since none of the original androids remain.
The 'Flint' Androids. We don't know how 'Flint' built or designed the Rayna androids. While he was technically capable, he also consistently failed to enable emotion or independence in his creations. (Flint also created the M-5 robot, which appeared to be all-around houseboy and guard dog.)
The M-5 Computer. Although not an android, M-5 was an AI with human engrams (Daystrom's).
TNG:
The Soong-type Android (Data, Lore, Lal, Julianna Tainer). Positronic brain. Strength, intellect, reflexes superior to humans. Cannot be mass-produced. Unclear as to how Soong designed Julianna to be stable when Lore was not; requires either a breakthrough or debugging of existing 'emotional' subroutines.
DS9/VOY:
I didn't watch most of DS9, and practically none of Voyager. No information on plots involving androids.

In SW, we've seen droids do everything from manual labor to flying starships and diplomatic protocol. They can be programmed as assassins or soldiers. (And for Trek folk who insist that the Trade Federation droids are little more than moronic cannon fodder, bear in mind that said moronic cannon fodder made quick work of approximately 180 Jedi on Geonosis.)
While Trek androids have traditionally been human-replica models with the full spectrum of human abilities, SW droids are more task-specific. If it doesn't need to move (as with R4 on Obi-Wan's starfighter in AOTC), it isn't built with legs.
Both ST and SW droids appear to have modular technology - Lore was originally found disassembled and easily re-assembled; Luke re-attaches C-3PO's arm without a specialized workshop or abundance of tools. Both ST and SW droids also have self-maintenance/repair functions, as referenced in dialogue.
Though SW droids seem to be dust magnets, we only see C-3PO taking an oil bath. R2-D2, seems to be fairly rugged, possibly because he's an astromech droid (and airtight).
On the whole, the argument comes down to the assumption of human form as an indicator of superior technology, which is right up there with the bozo who argued, 'it's got touch-screens, it's better tech!'

I notice that the HRD series of droids has not been mentioned. They seem to be even stronger and more capable then Data/Lore with emotional stability. And the fact that they are nearly imposible to tell apart form humans. Plus C3PO seems to have a sentience almost on a par with data and certinly more human.

Human Replica Droids, as mentioned in the OP. Most well known AFAIK is Guri from 'Shadows Of The Empire'. Visually and behaviorally indistingushable from humans, far stronger and faster, and it takes a quite extensive set of sensors to tell them from humans even with scanners.Cpl Kendall wrote:Whats the HRD series?Kartr_Kana wrote:I notice that the HRD series of droids has not been mentioned. Oh, those where mentioned up near the top of the thread, by Lord Revan. I have heard of Guri, but I am not familiar with her capabilities as I don't read the EU beyond the ICS and the original Thrawn trilogy. I have heard that she could become pregnant though.Kartr_Kana wrote:Human Replica Droids

In one of the later NJO books, Jaina goes up against a HRD with an enteched(sp?) "soul"...
The HRD kicks Jaina's butt.

She can't.Cpl Kendall wrote:I have heard that she could become pregnant though.
IIRC, that was Xizor pondering over whether she could or not. Which strikes me as rather stupid. He's the one who had her built, so he should fucking already know that.

A rather common syndrome of the obnoxiously rich-- not knowing how something works, not caring, except that it *does* work. Xizor also expresses annoyance at his defunct mechna-chair; he expects it to work, and when it doesn't, he growls at it.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:She can't.Cpl Kendall wrote:I have heard that she could become pregnant though.

HRDs can also move very god damned fast--similar to a blur of vision. The fight sequences from beginning to end between Luke and Guri in SOTE happened all in the span of a couple of seconds--as long as it took Leia's shout of "STOP!" to Luke to vanish down a hallway.

I once met a guy who wanked over the "more advanced" ST androids (or EMH?) which could dream, do art (painting, music) Does that count as an "advance"? Anyway just curious, have SW droids shown similar feats? So far I know there is reference that they have so-called "electronic hallucinations".

In terms of practicality no. In terms of being more advanced beings I would say yes, as it shows them to have a form of intelligence that is better than simply just doing a job and not being much good for anything else.Grand Moff Yenchin wrote:I once met a guy who wanked over the "more advanced" ST androids (or EMH?) which could dream, do art (painting, music) Does that count as an "advance"?
Don't know. Can't remember any offhand, unless one counts 3PO's capability for bitching.Anyway just curious, have SW droids shown similar feats? So far I know there is reference that they have so-called "electronic hallucinations".
