Im gonna break my network

Post by Zac Naloen »

Why the fuck is it so slow?

i have a 1mbp/s internet connection. Except for one problem.. i connect to the internet via ICS on a wireless network. the max speed i can get is 150kbp/s

What the fuck?.

As far as i can tell theres nothing wrong with network, connection speeds are all okay as far as im being told. But for some reason its just really fucking slow. its supposed to be 11mbp/s and it just doesn't do it.

Anyone know whats going on? how i can fix it possibly maybe etc please before i go shopping and scrap this wireless and just use a cat5 cable and router.

Sounds to me like one's kilobytes (the 150/s) and one's kilobits (1024/s). A little quick multiplication gives 150x8=1200, which ain't far off.

You're using ICS and a Router? Why?

Or are you just mixing terms, and both PCs are really connected directly to the router, and the wired one is the one that's OK.

If so, does anything change if you wire the one that's having trouble in? If the problem's something to do with the wireless connection, that will tell you.

after reading all your post, yes both computers are connected to the computer, computer connected to my modem is all fine and dandy mine isn't.

and the cable thing is a problem of distance... the computers aren't next to each other by any means.

OK, what's the signal strength and link speed of the wireless connection?

What kind of performance do you get transferring files between computers on your network?

Also, the make and model of your router and wireless card would be handy, there may be a firmware update or driver update available.

If the wireless PC is some distance from the router, how far? Although the theoretical maximum range is 150 metres, real world range is going to be lots less, and the maximum speed will drop with increased range, especially if there are things like walls in the way.

Could hte fact that my NIC is a different make to the other be a factor?

mines an asus that came with my pc. The others a belkin we bought with the router.

distance isn't that far, the router is situated in the room below mine (ceiling between it and me) and the room across from the main pc (1 wall) so signal strength is very good.

Im gonna see if i can find any driver updates

1Megabit persecond = approx 175 kilobytes persecond so your almost maxing out, your like(25 kilobytes short)

no im not, i've been over this already. im not confusing megabits and megabytes i know exactly what im talking about in terms of the speed this computer is not connecting at anything near the bandwidth that the main pc is connecting at. i can work this out by the fact im downloading a 9kilobytes per second and that pc IS downloading at about 175 kilobytes per second.

Are you on Comcast? They're having problems at the moment.

Comcast don't trade in the UK.

Plus any ISP issue would affect both machines, not just one.

Unless you get a performance change from moving that PC, I'd guess trying a different wireless card. If you know anyone else with one, try and borrow it.

Its definately an issue with my wireless, i've just noticed downloads always start at the right speed and then they drop sharpely i've managed to improve performance and its gone up to 20kilobytes per second, from 9 but thats not good enough.

Im gonna scrap the wireless and buy a cable tomorrow.
