Say what you will about the no sabers thing, there's something appealing about the idea that once you've ascended past a certain point in your Force development that you no longer need a lightsaber. Think about it, if you could effortlessly absorb blaster bolts and shoot force lighting or its light side equivalent then a lightsaber is a pretty useless item. It's a sign when you meet a master, he doesn't have a saber THIS one is dangerous.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Or maybe he can even make a saber-blade like thing out of pure Force energy. Or just strengthen the bonds of some cheap wooden staff enough to use as a substitute.

While their seniority and experience would make any member of the Council formidable, it in no way reflects their raw ability as Jedi.
Seconded. To expand, just because the Jedi think Mace is wise, doen't make him so. The Jedi are peace keepers at the beginning of the Clone Wars. They are used to being able to win just by showing up (the arrival of Qui-Gonn at the beginning of TPM illustrates this point. He expects two Jedi ambassadors to make the Trade Federation fold and until Sidious stiffened their spines that was exactly what they were going to do).
The Excellent Prismatic Spray. For when you absolutely, positively must kill a motherfucker. Accept no substitutions. Contact a magician of the later Aeons for details. Some conditions may apply.

ITW: OT said that Yoda still had his lightsabre during the OT, he kept it in storage but apparently did not need to use it.
Giving up your lightsaber as a requirement to become a Master was never stated in any official or canon source, to the best of my knowledge. It was a huge brainbug that a lot of people got from watching the movies, in which neither Yoda or the Emperor used lightsabers. Of course, Yoda was never in a situation where he needed to fight, and the Emperor never intended to duel either, but most people never seemed to understand that. My friends, who were more casual fans who probably never even saw any of the "fanon," believed in this too. My guess is that Zahn either got the brainbug as well, or patterned C'Baoth after the Emperor when he was writing the Thrawn Trilogy.
Could be. I got the impression reading the Thrawn Trilogy that he took every oppportunity to try to remind people of the OT with lines, scenes, characters, etc. C'Baoth was an Emperor wannabe.

As to the Jedi risking their lives for the Chosen One, that sounds like a good idea, but at the time they didn't know that Padme and Anakin were there (they disobeyed orders for their "rescue" remember?) they went to save Obi-Wan I thought...

Hell, IIRC they didn't even know Obi-Wan was captured by that point. He puts out the APB, they grab every spare ass at the temple and head in as backup, but with the mindset of cops and not soldiers. Show up, tell everyone 'Okay folks, show's over.', slap the cuffs on the ringleaders and end the whole thing.
