Quick laptop help!

Post by CaptainChewbacca »

I just got to my brother's house, and as I walk in I see my sister-in-law blowdrying her laptop. Seems she spilled a large glass of water on it, and it turned off and won't turn on. She's on the phone (on hold) with tech support, but is there anything she should do or be aware of?

It won't turn on again. Is it busted?

The way you describe it, the power was on when she dumped water on the laptop. She might want to put it in a warm dry place (not in direct sunlight, though,) wait for a few days or so or so, and then try charging the battery, and turning it on. Hopefully, this will give time for everything to dry out completely.

Chances are, she's short-circuited a lot of power components that don't like being short-circuited. She may get lucky if she waits for the thing to dry out completely before trying to turn it on, or she toasted something important and it'll never boot up again. In which case, it's time to see how good her warranty is.

Assuming its dead, the hard drive might still be okay, but I would not be surprised if she need to seek the help of someone like DriveSavers should the data be of critical importance.
