Adrian Sheppard may never be revisited, as that expansion was produced by Gearbox and thus may be considered quasi- or even non-canon.

I thinkOpposing Force is canon, it may be made by others, but that doesn't mean Valve didn't oversee it just as Konami did when Silicon Knights did the remake of the original MGS. I highly doubt it's Freeman, nor will it be Sheppard, but Alyx, Barney or someone else is very real.

I don't think Opposing Force was canon, since well. Black Mesa quite obviously was destroyed at the end of it. But you do visit 'Black Mesa East' in HL2, which either means it was not destroyed, or this area was not... I'm more inclined to go with OpFor never happened.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. There were plenty of screenshots of Gordon from HL1.

Woah. Calm. Half Life 2 had a location called 'Black Mesa, East'. That threw me off quite some. And jeez, it's not like expansions haven't been ignored before by other companies too. Remember how officially HW2 treated Cataclysm?

That doesn't mean squat and you know it. Anyone could have gotten another HEV Mk. V and gone off to use it or it could just be a reused HUD for another suit like Barney's Metrocop one. Without firm evidence of Gordon actually coming back, it seems he was whisked off promptly when the Citadel went boom.

As for where Aftermath is set, and the timeline, it's very much a logical continuation from where Half-Life 2 left off, as Laidlaw goes on to explain in the PC Gamer feature: "[Aftermath] deals with the events and issues set in motion during Half-Life 2. You've done critical damage to the Citadel. The whole place is going to go up, taking out City 17 and what's in its immediate radius. You and Alyx are leading the flight from the city getting up close and personal with some of the creatures and sights from the end of the game." Interestingly, apart from a few ambiguous illustrative captions, the PCG piece at no stage makes it 100 per cent explicit that Alyx's sidekick will be Gordon. However, writer Tim Edwards has subsequently clarified that you do play as Gordon in Aftermath.

I quickly glanced at that shot and didn't analyze it carefully.

Then yeah, I guess that would be Gordon. Even without the article you provided, it's clear that would be Gordon. In OF, the HUD was green for Adrian while in BS the HUD was blue for Barney. In HL1 and then HL2 the HUD was yellow for Gordon. Tradition suggests that the HUD will be yellow for Gordon again.

Unless they didn't change the HUD yet, and were just working on levels/new enemies/weapons. Which is a possibility.
