Catholic Law against fundamentalist beliefs.

Post by Castor Troy »

Perhaps a mod could sticky this (I know this'll come in handy some time in the future).

Well, I have my trusty Catholic Catechism with me, so I'll give you guys some quotes that go against what these fundamentalists teach. It's official canon law, as it has the "nihil obstat" and "imprimatur" declarations, meaning that it is official and free of error. It's also relatively easy to understand, and it explains things quite well.

So, say you guys go against some fundamentalists in a debate, try using some of these lines against them. Especially if they are Catholic. Otherwise they are going against canon Catholic law.

Anyways, I've put the subjects in bold, and have the quotes, along with page number, from Kreeft's Catechism.

Homosexuality
There is no doubt, no gray area and no change in the Church's teaching...However, improved psychological and biological knowledge requires us to be less judgemental about the subjective culpability of the homosexual persons.

"They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity...Unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided." (From the Official Catechism, CCC, paragraph 2358)

It is also necessary to make a clear distinction between homosexual desires, or a homosexual orientation, and homosexual acts. We are responsible for the acts we choose to perform, but not for the desires we experience...

...

And they (homosexuals) can be serious and even saintly Christians just as heterosexual persons can.
-Kreeft's Catholic Catechism

I have quite a bit more in this book. I'll post them later.

Enjoy.

Try reading this, particularly the entry on Catholicism. You'll get an idea of how well your arguments will go over against a fundamentalist.
"They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity...Unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided."
So....this means they can marry?

Government and Church (theocracies)
"It is not the role of the Pastors of the Church to intervene directly in the political structuring and organization of social life." (CCC Paragraph 2442)
Rascism
"...al men have the same nature and the same origin." (CCC Paragraph 1934).

This is the real basis for human equality; no other basis (such as human opinion or ideology or consensus) is absolutely secure against changing human notions of "superior" races or "unwanted" groups. Only God is unchangeable.
"Right" and "Left" of the Catholic morality
Catholic social and political morality does not conform totally to any popular secular establishment.

...

Nor is it an inconistent compromise between them (the Left and the Right). It is a higher and more complete way, based on the essential reality of human nature, not the changing fashions of any human ideology.
Well, I'll see if there are any more of use. If you have a Catechism of yourself, please post some helpful quotes (please NOT from the Bible...they can be confusing and need proper interpretations, which the Catechisms provide).

It gives a paragraph against gay marriage, so according to Catholic law, no.

However, the quotes I provided does go against the ignorant notions that gay bashing is acceptable and that they're doing it for God.

No read further in the quotes. Homosexuals are OK as long as they don't act on their impulses then they are being sinful and shall burn in hell.

Sarcasm, silly. :P

As I pointed out with a link to Mike's CvE site, fundamentalists won't give a damn about the RCC's interpretations. That's why they broke away in the first place.

I nearly forgot...

EVOLUTION
The doctrine of creation and the theory of biological evolution do not necessarily contradict eachother...He (God) could have used the evolutin of species by natural selection to produce the human body.
Yeah, Firefox, I know they won't listen to this worth a shit, but at least it'd point out to everyone that they are not on a moral crusade but rather heresy. You could point out that they're heretics, as well. When they ask for you to prove it, try using some of these.

But this might work only against Catholic fundamentalists that claim to conform to the Catholic canon.

Why can't you realize that they don't give a fucking shit about Catholic dogma? You can quote from the Catechism until you pass out; you're not going to convince a non-Catholic fundamentalist that he's a heretic, any more than he's going to convince you that you're full of shit.

Uh, Firefox, Catholics can be fundementalists too. Religious fanaticism is not limited to Protestants and evangelists.

I'm aware of that. I'm pointing out that Christians whose views differ from that of the Catechism won't care what it has to say.
