I think my monitor is fried....

Post by Butterbean569 »

Last night while I was studying for finals, I knocked over a glass of water onto my keyboard and monitor. My keyboard is fine, but my monitor...

Over the next 4 hours I left the monitor on, and everything was fine. There weren't any glitches and nothing odd went on. I turned it off when I went to bed and everything seemed fine. Then, when I woke up...poof. It doesn't turn on anymore. I tried messing with different electrical sockets, making sure cords were plugged in, etc.

What are the odds that my monitor is totally fried? It worked for 4+ hours after the spill, and I cleaned the mess as much as possible. Plus, only a little bit of water got onto the screen, it didn't seem as if it went over any vents or openings to get into the inside of the machine. Also...if it is water damage, is it beyond repair? I'm going to bring it into a computer repair shop tonight or tomorrow to see what they say, but if you guys have any opinions it would be great to hear them.

Man I hope my monitor isn't hosed...I won't have the money to get a new one for at least a month

If it's water damage, you're USCWAP. Even if you could get it fixed, you'd be better off getting a new monitor, for what the labor and parts would run. Any other monitor you can hook up to test for a minute or two?

I'm using my roomate's monitor on the same computer right now...so it's definatly something to do with the monitor  Mine is (was?) a nice 17 inch flat screen one too. My roomate has a dual monitor setup, so he let me use one of his until school gets out. But when the summer comes along I'll be without one for at least a couple of weeks until I get my first paycheck.

As for bringing it into a repair shop...do you think it'd be worth a try? I'm pretty strapped for cash right now, so bringing it in to get inspected only to find out it's wasted (and getting charged $$$) would be a bitch.

Don't bother. You just did everything they will do, that is plugged another monitor up and say 'it works, it's the monitor.'

I tried plugging it in today hoping it might've magically worked...and it didn't :(

Now that I think about it, the area that the water got on was all over the buttons on the bottom faceplate. That has me wondering...could just the electronics in the buttons be fried? I know nothing about electronics, so I dunno if that's even a seperate electrical system that's isolated from the other areas. If it is, I wonder if just the buttons are messed up...? Hmm...I might take it in when I get home from school (and get my first paycheck) just to see if that's the problem. Anyone know anything about this type of stufF?

You always leave it off to let it dry out;I have seen water poured into the same television TWICE, and after a drying out period it works.

first off...Shep, I'm sorry...but you with a Sarah ava is freaking me out...
sorry, had to get that off my chest

Second, if you can manage toget your parents to "loan" you some cash till your first paycheck, you can nab a nice 17" over at Circuit City or Best Buy for under a 100 USD.

That's what I did when my monitor screwed up on me.
