Another reason for fighting is to provide enough of a distraction that the ISD won't notice the escape pod or will pay less attention to it. Because if they surrender without a fight but eject an escape pod it first makes them look rather suspicious if not guilty and there's a chance the ISD will either destroy it or tractor it back. Plus, one of their goals was to get Obi-Wan, who was on Tatooine, to help them.

Right, an important point we've overlooked.. the purpose of travelling to Tatooine was to enlist Obi Wan's aid.

Kazuaki, you're probably right that Vader could have justified executing the passengers crew of the Tantive IV, but I don't think he planned to do so. Whether or not the Tantive IV stood down, and whether or not he could have justified his actions to the Senate, Vader always did intend to wipe them all out. He's just that big a meanie :)

Here's another question: exactly how did the rebels plan to exploit the weakness they hoped to discover in the DS? Obviously, part of this plan involved getting the last of the Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi to do the dirty work. (It's interesting that Bail Organa knew where Kenobi was staying, considering the level of secrecy of that bit of information. One wonders if he also knew exactly why Kenobi was staying there.)

Anyways, let's say that everything went as planned, that the Tantive IV managed to pick up Obi-Wan, go back to Yavin, and cook up a plan. Then what? They don't know where the DS is. In RotJ, they lost a bunch of spies trying to find the DS2, and it was stationary (not to mention that Palpatine allowed them to find it). Knowing that the DS plans are still out there, the Imperials probably wouldn't try to employ it with impunity, but would rather use it cautiously. "The government of Alderaan will capitulate or we will destroy the planet!" The government doesn't capitulate, and out of the blue, the DS shows up and destroys it, taking off shortly thereafter.

There would be no way for the rebels to anticipate where the DS would show up, and therefore no way to employ their means to destroy it. In the end, having the Tantive IV get captured was the best thing that could have happened to them.
73% of all statistics are made up, including this one.

I'm waiting as fast as I can.

Considering that Organa was in on the plan to separate the Skywalker twins, it's not too much of a stretch.

The Rebels probably planned to leak the location of a base and draw the DS there so they could engage.

We know Obi-wan and Yoda are probaly the only surviving Jedi(by ANH), also (ROTS spoilers it seem that Bail Organa, is one of the few if not the only one who knows where both went (except for the Jedi them selves). Also there's probaly some reason why Tantive IV changed to real weapons instead of fakes it had in ROTS

There were a handful of other Jedi survivors by ANH.

well no, you'd think would have heard if there were other Jedi.

True, but for the most part Obi-wan tries not to advertise the fact that he's a Jedi.

Probably. Obi-wan's first excursion after ROTS involves a former Jedi who is resisting the New Order. I don't know the details of any others.
