Good computer gamepads
Anyone know of some good ones? I'd particulary like one quite similar to the PS2 controller, mainly because I intend to use it to play San Andreas in all it's glory when it comes out for PC, and I'm just so very used to the PS2 controller that it'll porbably be my best way to do it.
At any rate, any and all good gamepad suggestions are welcome. Naturally, if they're affordable so much the better.

Buy a PS2-USB adaptor from Lik-sang. I did, and the PS2 controller kicks the shit out of all those crap PC ones.
I tried for ages to find a decent controller for arcade ems and fighting games, and couldn't. PS2 controllers are effortless, piles of buttons, all that muscle conditioning from PS2-playing, and the software works properly so you can map any button to anything in any game with proper DirectX inputs.
It's called the 'Super Joy Box'. Best name ever!

I'd suggest the Nyko Airflo EX. I have one, and it's quite useful. Besides being able to use it as a standard gamepad, it also comes with software that allows you to map mouse and keyboard functions its buttons and axes. The button layout is identical to the Dual Shock, plus it has a 13th mappable button where the "analog" button is on a Dual Shock. Plus, it has the slightly gimmicky, yet still quite nice feature of having a built-in fan that circulates air through small holes in the controller. Very useful for preventing Nintendo Palms.

I got one for a (former) friend. The thing truly was plug and play and worked great with the emulator. Bit pricey but very niceSpanky The Dolphin wrote:Oh, sweet Jesus Christ, that just made my day...Dalton wrote:This might be of interest

My Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Power served me well for quite a few years, but one of the buttons got stuck yesterday and I can't get the thing open to see if I can fix it. Still, it lasted through more than three years of heavy use, and was a nice pad. The button layout was basically the same as the Dual Shock, but with an extra pair of triggers about halfway down the "handles". The only problem with it was that it only had one button on the middle of the pad, which meant that I had to map the Start and Select buttons to the triggers when using emulators.

I like my pc one. it is based on the ps2 design but more comfortable in the hand.Vendetta wrote:I'd agree with Stark, get an adapter for a proper joypad, not a PC designed one.
Personally, I find the Xbox S-Controller layout fits my hands the most snugly, and adapters for that are simpler than pie. (The X-Box front ports are actually USB compliant, just with a rugrat-proof form factor)

I have a Nyko Airflo EX. It acts goofy quite often, doesn't work well at all with FPS games -> no matter what the sensitivity or calibration is, the stick only works at two speeds, fast or slow. Don't expect to play any FPS Goldeneye style with this pad.
It's fine for emulated console games, and passable for fighters, but was too expensive at the time I bought it.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."
Its all true! Designed-for-PC gamepads are all rubbish, in my experience. The D-pad microswitches are screwed, spongy buttons, terrible return springs on thumbsticks, bad sensitivity (either too high or too low) on thumbsticks, etc. Sure, I've only used AU$40-50 ones, but FUCK, its like AU$10 for a converter for either DC, XBOX or PS2 controllers. With a console controller, you can play anything (I use the PS2 controller mostly for Freespace), excellent response, etc etc etc etc. Everyone's got a console of some sort: why buy a crappy PC-made imitation?

They're not all bad.
If I were you I would check out the Belkin lineup of gamepads and controllers. I own a Nostromo n50/n30 combination and I cannot rave about it enough. If their n45 is built to the same standards, it's going to be a durable, comfortable, responsive piece of equipment.
Edit: One of the best features is their programmable buttons functions, which as far as I understand it surpass those of other models.

Then you get the ones which ignore all control input the moment more than two buttons are pressed. Yes, the D-pad almost always counts as a button in this case, effectively locking you completely out if you have the temerity to (for example) go diagonally across the screen while firing your guns. Which invariably only results in a messy death because your ship isn't moving an inch or firing at all BECAUSE OF THE STUPIDASS GAMEPAD LOCKOUT. WTF~~??!
