Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?

Post by Dooku's Disciple »

Who do you think will win the looming format wars? I've heard that the next Playstation will be Blu-Ray compatible while the next X-Box will support HD. Looks like we're in for a battle of epic proportions.

Or is it possible that Mr. and Mrs. Average Consumer won't give a toss and both will go the way of the laserdisc?

The reason I ask is because I plan to buy a DVD recorder with inbuilt hard disk sometime in the next year or three, and I'd prefer to wait until the latest technology storm has blown over before I commit to anything. What say you, my learned friends?

(Feel free to move this to G & C if you're so inclined)

From some recent reports, it appears Sony and Toshiba are in talks to merge both formats into one hybrid format. Also the XBox 360 will have HD content, but will only use the current DVD format.

Excluding a hopeful compromised unified format, I hope that Blu-Ray wins.

I have heard that the HD DVD format may win out in the end as the adult industry seems rather keen on it.

Blu-Ray is better, hd-dvd is technically inferior and also big on intrusive copy protection schemes.

Hollywood expressed its interest to have only one format, as they don't want to publish movies in two formats... Warner Bros. already said they'll use HD DVD.
One big bonus of HD DVD is that the existing DVD production facilities can be modified to make HD DVDs, while you need new ones for Blu-ray.

Which means, inertia being what it is, HD-DVD will likely come out on top.

I guess so.
If I were a disk producer, I wouldn't be exactly jumping with joy to have to buy a whole new line of machines...

I have faith that they will agree on a hybrid.
