Odin was crafty, and although ultimately fated to die at Ragnarok, in every story in which he features, he's the one pulling the strings. Everyone else is dancing to his tune. I always admired a character that much cleverer than everyone else around him.
If this appeals to you, I would recommend Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Its an interesting take in which Norse gods (including your friend Odin) and other mythlogical deities are still in our time.

I agree with the appeal of the Trickster. Both Loki from Norse Mythology and perhaps even Puck are interesting characters to follow.

Hektor, Odysseus, Athena from Greek classical literature. And I agree with mr friendly guy, The Count of Monte Cristo was just bad ass all the way through.

If Irish Mythology counts:
  • Mannanan mac Lir/Mongan
  • Goll mac Morna
  • Fergus mac Roich (randy bastard)
Otherwise, probably Barry Lyndon from Thackary's The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, evil, manipulative bastard that he is.

Got a bit of a soft spot for Loki too.
After all, this is completely straightforward. What could possibly go wrong?

THIS LOOKS LIKE A JOB FOR EMERGENCY PANTS!

I hate Matt Damon and there's not a damn thing you can do about it

No, I'm not on drugs. I'm like this all the time.

His name was Edmond Danté. And he's my fav as well.
Though Athos and Richelieu from "The Three Musketeers" are close.
(Yes, I'm a fan of Dumas :) )

If it's any consolation to you, Lancelot was a later French importation. The very earliest accounts of Arthur say nothing of him.
True, which is nice when you read good mister Geoffery. As hard as that is.

I particularly like the more recent ( :P ) Winter King series where Lance of Lot is a total ass and coward. Jives with me just fine.

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Loki, of Norse myth. Sneaky-ass bastard who was once step ahead of his adversaries. Got two wives, had four fucking awesome kids, powerful, smart, charismatic, and supposedly quite handsome (as you'd imagine a shapeshifter could manage.)

And in the end, has a ship made of dead people's toenails/fingernails and leads an army of the dead. Holy shit, that's cool.
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

Hmm... hard to say. Puck's a good one, but I always liked the Norse gods. They were badass, didn't take any guff. :D

Odysseus, on the other hand, was excellent as well... Achilles always struck me as a whiny brat. Plus-- can't beat Sean Bean *not* dying for once! :D
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Well the first books I read were Sherlock Holmes, and The Once an Future king. however, I've always been a sucker for old Sci-Fi stories, and to that extent the tragic captain nemo.
