Looks to me like the extinguisher and tire were in the way, and the only open target was the guy's head.
Hmm. A near to the chest shot might also not be a good idea if it hit the fire extinguisher. Anybody know what would happen? Ricochet or explosion or just a bad leak?
You hit a fire extinguisher in a guys hands at that range you are going to get 1 of 2 results

1- it penetrates. You get explosive decompression, which will turn the extinguisher into a short range missile. Doing a LOT of damage to anyone it hits.

2- it ricochets, you risk hitting someone with the ricochet and the guy still braining you with an extinguiser.

And additional point to this is that the cop in question was a 19 year old conscript assigned to the Carabinieri and who should not have been assigned as part of the riot control police in the Genova riots, the actions are understandable. You're sitting in a jeep in the middle of all hell breaking loose, several people attacking your car with the intent to demolish it and probably you as well, what the hell would you do? I don't remember if he was alone in the car of if he had a partner who had been injured, but he was scared shitless, fired in self defense and then panicked and just wanted to get away, which required him to back the car up first before he could get anywhere.

IIRC, he wasn't punished for his actions (correctly), but his superiors got quite an earful about it...

If you want to subdue someone you pull out the mace or a baton. If you want to kill someone you pull out the gun. If the situation is bad enough to pull out a gun then it is bad enough to kill someone with it.

Cops, atleast here in America, are trained that when they pull out their weapons, they shoot to kill or shoot for the center of mass witch will kill you all the same. If the cop doesn't want to or need to kill someone, he is trained to use other methods than using his/her gun.

On the topic, ya, the guy was justified in shooting the stupid motherfreaker. He was protecting himself and if the report is right, he was protecting the well being of the injured cop who was in the jeep as well. The only guy he shot was the one posing a direct threat to him and his buddy.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red
