That's what I think annoys some people about the line. Aesthetics wise they are nothing alike but yes they are handguns much like Vader and Luke's lightsabers. They are the same in function but certainly not in form.

Maybe Palpatine scanned Luke's mind and discovered that Luke considered it a point of pride that his new sabre was nothing like Anakin's, so Palps decided to say the opposite just to piss him off.

But what does it matter that Palpatine said "much like your father's"? Someone hit it nail on here, he's simply trying to make a correlation that Anakin was a Jedi too, but now is beyotch to the master of everything. People are seriously overcomplicating matters.

Thats a poor correlation. a Glock 9 mm and a Desert Eagle both are hand guns, but they fire different ammunation, different rates of speed, and different stopping power.Stravo wrote:Think of it this way. A light saber is a light saber. The difference in the hilt is irrelevant because they both have the same basic function. Besides that, as someone else pointed out, the emperor's point was that Anakin once was a Jedi and he was turned much as Luke would be (in the emperors viewpoint).

Light sabers
Well, I think that the reason may have to do wiith buttons. This is a little farfetched, and palpy may have been talking more about, how it was the sons weapon more of emenations than physical appearance. Also, Palpy may be talking about construction materials as well.

So do those two guns. The differences between them and different lightsabres can easily be correlated (ie. calibre = blade thickness, magazine capacity = power cell, safe action vs single action = a lever you have to depress to keep the sabre on vs a simple switch, etc).Admiral_K wrote:Thats a poor correlation. a Glock 9 mm and a Desert Eagle both are hand guns, but they fire different ammunation, different rates of speed, and different stopping power.Stravo wrote:Think of it this way. But on screen evidence never indicates differences in power, blade thickness, etc. There is nothing that Vader's blade demonstrated that Luke's blade could not duplicate.YT300000 wrote:So do those two guns. User the handguns analogy, you would essentially be looking at two guns made by differeny manufacturuers, but with the same caliber bullet, same stopping power, same magazine capacity, same accuracy etc. They may be styled a bit different, but saying one is "much like the other" is hardly a stretch given their equal perfomance.
Exactly, and along the same line, the difference in lethality between a good loading of 9x19 Luger Parabellum and a Magnum cartridge will yield pretty much identical stopping power. Now, I might be a bit off since I'm going from memory here, but a 9x19 115 gr. Remington +P will result in 90% one shot stops, while a .44 Magnum 210 gr. Winchester STHP will give 91% one shot stops. Comparable enough that the analogy still holds.Admiral_K wrote:But on screen evidence never indicates differences in power, blade thickness, etc. There is nothing that Vader's blade demonstrated that Luke's blade could not duplicate.
Err... yes, that's what I've been saying. That the analogy is fine.User the handguns analogy, you would essentially be looking at two guns made by differeny manufacturuers, but with the same caliber bullet, same stopping power, same magazine capacity, same accuracy etc. They may be styled a bit different, but saying one is "much like the other" is hardly a stretch given their equal perfomance.
At any rate, this just about the most useless debate I've ever been in. Arguing about the details of the validity of a minor side-analogy to an already nigh-irrelevant issue.

Do we have any detailed pictures of the rest of the sabres that Anakin went through in the prequels?

I already know what Vader's lightsabre looks like up close. What I want to know is whether any of Anakin's previous sabres had more in common with the one Luke built, which could justify the Emporer's comment.

A picture of his AotC sabre should also be available- it is very similar to his TESB/ROTJ Sith sabre. No similarity to Luke's, which is simply an Obi-Wan copy.

From a movie prop point of view, the reason that Vaders ROTJ lightsaber looks so unlike his ANH and TESB lightsabers is that it was actually a redress of Luke's TESB lightsaber. The original Vader saber was made from a Heiland Synchronar flashgun, IIRC, whereas Luke's was made from a Graflex 3-cell (to those few of you who don't already know, these were 1930s press camera flashguns, and were still common as dirt in the 70s). For some reason, the original Vader sabers from TESB were lost, and they had to redress Luke's to resemble it. Luke's ROTJ saber was derived from the stunt version of Obi Wan's ANH saber. They reused some of the ANH Obi Wan sabers, and machined some new ones out of aluminum to serve as the "hero" prop for close ups. Obi Wan's ANH saber (the "hero" version) was not a camera flashgun, but was made up of various components, including a WWI British rifle grenade, a Graflex clamp, a sink knob, and a couple of parts that have not been positively identified.
The interesting thing is that the original lightsabers, like so many other props for the first film, were made up of scrounged items in order to keep to a limited budget, as opposed to being purpose built, and yet look far better than many of the purpose built props from later films, when they had the budget to afford such things.

Outward appearance counts for shit. Internal design is what matters when the Emperor states that Luke's saber is "much like his father's".

See, that's what Luke's sabre in RotJ should've looked like, IMO. The clear lineage with both his RotS-TESB sabre and his Sith sabres is obvious there. The Jazz Intern wrote:Here is his AOTC lightsaber. It looks nothing like lukes.
Well, the sabre designs of TPM were just crappy. They looked nothing like OT lightsabres. Obi-Wan's, Qui-Gon's, Darth Maul's, they really were just totally different. For some reason, Obi-Wan in AotC had a different variant of his TPM sabre- but Anakin's AotC sabre looks great. Then in RotS they finally came back to the original designs, which IMO Obi-Wan should've had from the start. Anakin's RotS sabre actually is pretty close to the design of the ANH/TESB sabre, more so than I originally thought. The interesting thing is that the original lightsabers, like so many other props for the first film, were made up of scrounged items in order to keep to a limited budget, as opposed to being purpose built, and yet look far better than many of the purpose built props from later films, when they had the budget to afford such things.
