Really excellent fan review of RoTS (spoilers)

Post by Durandal »

I won't post the text here because it contains some spoilers. Here is the link.

I singled out this review because it's written from the perspective of a die-hard Star Wars fan. The guy's views on Anakin's motivations in turning to the Dark Side and why Luke Skywalker was able to beat Vader and avoid the temptation are really just spot-on, and I've never heard them articulated so well. He lambastes the Jedi for being a bunch of "goodie-two shoes" pricks who are out of touch. Really an excellent review.

He also puts in one quote from RoTS that I really dig. "This is how democracy ends, with thunderous applause," says Padmé at one point. What a great little quote. I love it. At least no one has to worry about this movie having a dearth of quotations.

I bought that Talking Yoda toy – and next thing I know the little Green Bastard is trying to tell me the story of REVENGE OF THE SITH.
That's fucking funny!

I love how together Palpatine is. He’s just one of the greatest bad guys in the history of bad guys. He absolutely must be Karl Rove’s hero.

Very well written. This person really does connect with Star Wars fans on a personal level, you can tell he understands it. There's something to be said about that.

It's fucking cool.

I loved that line by Padme the first time I saw it in one of the Trivial Pursuit clips. Finally, she showed some semblance of spirit. :P

he Bad Guy has his priorities right. He’s controlling the robots, the clones and to a large extent the Jedi… yet still manages to multi-task enough to listen to Anakin and help him deal with his premonitions of personal tragedy. He'll take the time, to ignore an amazing science fiction zero G Esther Williams number, to tell young Skywalker a SITH LEGEND. A story, an anecdote. And he tells it, like a father would to a son. And the story is directly related to the problem Anakin is facing, it gives him hope, direction and the first glimmer of a happy ending to his concern. He doesn’t tell Anakin bullshit like… learn to not give a shit, detachment is the key to inner peace… What sort of bullshit is that? Ignore your problems, betray those you love, watch everyone you care about die – and just be happy cuz they’re food for the force, which you manipulate… and everyone’s death will just make you more powerful. WHAT SORT OF FUCKING JEDI WISDOM IS THAT SHIT YODA??? THAT'S NOT REALLY HELPFUL YOU NEGATIVE GREEN TURD!
Spot on :)

This is an incredible review, from a guy who really understands the whole mythos. :)

Of course, looking at the reader talkback at the bottom shows you the state of the "average fan" or "GL haters" out there. It really is fortelling the way ROTS is going to be viewed in the public eye, they'll pick apart all its weaknesses, cite Lucas for screwing them over, and lambast it just like TPM. It doesent matter how good the film is, the reaction is inevitable.

Well, they'res only one thing I can say to this inevitable reaction and its perpatrators:

Harry Knowles really baffles me sometimes. On one hand, he'll write reviews like this one, which are just mind-numbingly stupid and barely readable...but he can also write reviews like this. I mean, say what you will about Knowles, but this review is incredibly perceptive.

Wow, I’ve seen my last new Star Wars film. Fuck.
A perfectly appropriate ending.

It's funny because they're barely exaggerating at all.

If that's how Harry still writes, then I'm sure as hell glad that I stopped going there four years ago...

I recall him once, honest to God, wrote a sentence that was about comparing some movie or whatever to the balls of shit dangling on the hairs around Isaac Hayes' asshole, in regards to how aparently mind-blowingly awesome Hayes' character's personna in Escape to New York was.

I don't need to read garbage like that. Good review or bad, Harry can cram his rambling stream of consciousness "style" down his throat and choke on it.

I usually don´t like Knowles´ reviews, but this one was actually quite tactful from him. I liked it.

And according to people monitoring sites like Rottentomatos etc., ROTS so far has about 24 professional reviews, with 22 positive and 2 negative or indifferent. Sounds promising. :)

I've read the negative reviews and I have to point out that it sounds like it was written by someone who dislikes the Star Wars universe. In other words there isn't a sense of objectivity in the whole article.

Judge for yourselves.
