Thing is, those two simply used big wire cutters to make a hole in the perimeter fence, casually strolled over one of the bridges leading to the sub and went in through an OPEN hatch. There was no one about to stop them at any point, and obviously out of place civilians in the compound would (or at least should) raise immediate suspicion in any personnel that saw them. The space they crossed was wide open, and they should have been spotted by security cameras and the people monitoring them if by nobody else.

And they spent 20 minutes aboard the sub, staying put, without being seen or accosted because there was no one around. The reason they got caught that soon is because they triggered a fire alarm themselves!

Scenario: What if it had been a team of seven to ten trained terrorist or commando operatives, armed with submachine guns, pistols, and explosives? Scratch a nuclear sub and any personnel who happened to get in their way.

Those two won't get charged with anything more than minor vandalism for damaging the perimeter fence, this has been confirmed by the authorities in Britain, and the reason is that the Royal Navy wants to keep as much of this complete fuckup under wraps as it can. Heads are defintely going to roll, and not just one. There's going to be several people facing an enquiry and probable court martial for dereliction of duty, I would think.

There you have it. What I've been saying. There is after all only ONE way to get aboard a submarine. At no point was anyone even looking.

Your damned right heads will roll. But they did prove their point, in that Terrorists could have got at those Boats and caused shite to happen. deMIRVed or not, these are nuclear powered submarines and, esp with SSBN's, the risk of serious sabotage or sinking them is too great to have piss poor security.

Where is the Trident force based? Is it near a populated area?

Never mind. I just went to that "Trident Ploughshares" site- where those two protesters were from.
To use or threaten to use nuclear weapons of any kind is a crime against humanity and totally immoral.
Trident is criminal and illegal.
Trident is a clear breach of Articles I and VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Trident pollutes the environment with toxic and radioactive waste threatening the future of the planet.
Trident deployment does not respect international Nuclear Free Zone boundaries and exposes every person on the planet to the risk of a nuclear accident.
Trident warheads are transported from one end of the UK to another exposing countless communities to the risk of a nuclear accident.
Scarce global resources and vast sums of British taxpayers' money spent on Trident (currently around £1.5 billion per year) are being diverted from urgent social necessities (eg in health and education) and from programmes that could tackle the underlying causes of international conflict.
A majority of the world's nations feel threatened by nuclear weapons and want them disarmed. Many poor nations regard them as a terrible threat which is used to protect the interests of the rich nations.
Trident is anti-democratic. The decision to have nuclear weapons was made in secret without informed public debate. The majority of people in recent polls say it would be best for British security if we do not have nuclear weapons.
The British Government and NATO are not disarming Trident themselves.
Global citizens have a right and obligation to uphold international law, to behave ethically and in the interests of the global community, and to disarm Trident themselves.

Alarmist bullshit. These kooks have been continually trying to sabotage these boomers for some four years. I don't know about you guys, but I think it's a wonder these people haven't been killed by an over-zealous guard.

Oh also, they think every Boomer is a 'Trident' ....

What really astounds me is how the hell they could have such lax security around a site that is KNOWN to be a target for nutjobs like that. When I was in the military, the area around our barracks was constantly monitored with security cameras and any civilian coming in or going out had to show identification and a legitimate reason for being there. If anybody had tried to come over the wire fence that separated the barracks area from the backyard of an apartment block, they'd have been apprehended immediately. One night someone had come over that very fence and made a halfhearted effort to set fire to one of the APCs parked near it (unsuccessfully, of course), and nobody noticed. The whole bloody company got to hear about it at length when the empty gas can and other signs of intrusion were noticed. And that was a barracks area with just a few APCs and a limited armory (securely locked).

We're talking about nuclear subs here, and if they have worse security...

Apparently protesters have actually gotten aboard the submarines before- one tapped a marine on the shoulder. The marine fainted from shock. A MARINE goddamit!!! What if the marine wasn't scared out of his wits and turned around and smacked him unconcious with an SA-80?!

Bottom line: letting a nutcase get onto an SSBN is an embarassment but is hardly the kind of thing that could lead to an end-of-the-world incident.
Acutal to the Russia if somone got aboard an Ohio or Seawolf(I belive in 83 they had the Full Plans for the Los Angeles) if some "lone nut" walked aboard with a 20mm Camera and snaped a few hundred photos of the Command Deck and inside of the Submarine(And the Reactor Core if they can) anyone from the Russian's to the Chinese(Or are making false starts into the Sub business) would pay millions for that kind of thing

Oh and your not fogeting how much damage a two pound block of C-4 could do if Lobed at the Reactor(Can we say Breech and Ecological Aninlation ontaiment for a few Natical Miles?)

The L85 would probably shatter into a half dozen pieces.

The USN keeps armed Marine guards with its SSBN's at all times in port. I don't believe they do that with SSN's however.

When I was in England this summer, all the RN ships I say had Royal Marine guards, even the minesweepers. Whoever was on duty at the time is in for a world of pain.

Probably because they fear something similar could happen even to the USN.Before laughing to the british it would be better ask yourself how much thick is the security around YOUR bases.By the way britsh activists have been studying how to do precisely that for years.I stumbled on their site a few moths ago.
No evidence. No link. Nada.

Good point about the L85. That things been fixed by H&K and it STILL doesn't work properly. Can't believe a marine fainted from fright ...

Interesting, few years ago I was in Portsmouth to see HMS Victory etc and Victory had a Marine on duty, who also doubled as the onbord souivenerr shop assitant.

Why the wasted range? And the uncontrollable recoil on auto?

Yeah, same here, cept there were two RM's, and as a bonus security, there were two Army sergeants taking a tour.
You'd think there'd be extra guards out, considering the threats from Al-Qaeda et al.

The G36 would be a perfectly good replacement for the L-85 methinks. When in doubt- buy German.

A nice shotgun, is a good weapon for such guard duty. At least in my opinion.

Indeed, not only is Victory the Flagship of the RN, she is the worlds only 100 gun ship of the line in existance and she is still in commission to boot.

Again, what would al Qaida do with an SSBN? With the exception of the Yemeni antishipping cell, al Qaida likes to kill large numbers of people for shock value. They're not into destroying equipment. Unless al Qaida has a few dozen people trained to operate nuclear submarines--note that the training will be specific to each class of submarine--the Islamists aren't going to kill more than just the 150 odd sub crew. Barely worth the trouble given the demonstrated kill rate from hijacking airliners or bombing night clubs.

I think that the number killed would be beside the point. Trident is Brtians nuclear deterrent, sinking one of those would crate a major scandal quite aside from any contamination that might occur. Attacking civilains is one thing, but succesfully attacking and destroying one of a nations primary defensive weapons is a serious thing.
