Need new PSU, advice?

Post by Laughing Mechanicus »

I was happily playing Dawn of War earlier when there was a bang, flash and a my computer powered off. Having had this before I knew it was one of the capacitors going in the PSU, and thankfully it doesn't seem to have caused any other damage as the system is now working again on an old PSU I had in a spare computer. Kind of annoying as the PSU was a good £100 worth Antec one which I only got just over a year ago (guess how long the warranty was...)

However I have a GF FX5950 Ultra and this old 300W PSU can't supply the power that it needs, so its running underclocked right now to stay stable.

I need suggestions for a new PSU available in the UK that wont break the bank and with a high enough wattage and good enough quality to run an Athlon 3200+ system with the aforementioned graphics card.

Normally I wouldnt ask about something like this but I know from past experience that there are alot of "fake" high wattage supplies that claim to give around 500W but do it in such a way that in reality they are supplying little more than a 300W one.

So any suggestions?

Go with a Sparkle, Fortron Source, or Antec PSU of appropriately high rating (400 watts or higher) and you can't go wrong.

Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Definitely go the Fortron route. I'd stay clear of Enermax though, unless you like the idea of your power supply dying on you. ;)
