Titanic was outdone by Episode IV when it was re-released as the special edition in cinemas.

$50 million is being confirmed by various other sources, including Box Office Mojo.

CNN's article also holds it was $50 million on Thursday. I wonder what the total will be for the weekend.

You know, I didn't even think about the international gross from yesterday. Factoring whatever that was, the film could have easily made more than $100 million on Thursday...

You know, I live in a not really big town (215.000) and we have a CineStar movie-palace, which has ~10 showings of Ep. III at a day.
I had to buy a ticket for Saturday, just to get a seat. I think that shows you how well the film has started. Oversea seem to be also strong.

Of course dubbed.
In Germany, if you dare to bring a movie only with subtitles into the cinemas, you can be assured that it will be a financial desaster. We have a quite big industry here, to translate movies by dubbing the dialoge. People are used to high-quality dubbing.

Damn, that's fucking high. I wonder if it'll beat Spider-Man (114M) for highest opening weekend gross.

Ugh. Live-action dubbing is a tragedy. German audiences won't go see a subtitled film?

Hell no.

Although foreign dubbing is often very accomplished.

They're saying that it will beat the 4-day gross, but that it probably won't top the 3-day gross since it released on Thursday.

Subtitled movies aren't popular at all. People want to see a movie in German, not in a foreign language many won't understand without subtitles...
Everything gets dubbed, though there are cinemas, which have original version-showings, so I can watch the original.
And sometimes, very, very, rarely, the dubbing is an improvement over the original version :)

The low standards us English-speakers are accustomed to seeing from dubs are apparently more a side-effect of how little money there is in importing foreign-language materials to English. After all, the only ones who want to watch say, anime, are kids who won't care and anime fans who've already seen it fansubbed and won't buy it on official release.

I asked a German girl I had a one-nighter with about German cinema and the thought of watching the films in English with German subtitles had never occured to her.

Ugh, I want more numbers, God damn it. It seems to take twice as long to get any numbers, with the international perspective being completely silent...
