Favorite Trooper Design

Post by Darth Raptor »

This isn't about which set of armor you find to be most superior, it's just about which one you think looks the best.

I really did like the original clone troopers, but they looked more Mandalorian (for obvious reasons) and less Imperial than I would have liked. I didn't like their blocky "jawline" much either.

The classic stormtroopers are indeed classic, it's sometimes odd to think that an armor design conjured up in the 1970s is really spiffy by today's standards. Part of the reason I like it so much is that the face design became an archetype by which scores of other helmets were modeled after. Pilots, armor crewmen and others share the same look and I like that.

The new clone troopers, however, are incredible. I love this design. For fear of stating the obvious, it's like they're a hybrid between the Mandalorian motif and the classic stormtrooper (duh!). But one thing I didn't notice immediately is that they seem vaguely similar to the scout troopers from RotJ. While it was almost certainly designed as an interim transition between the clone trooper and the stormtrooper, the new design has an appeal of its own. It pains me to say it, but I actually like it better than the classic stormie helmet.

So, what about you guys?

ROTS troopers for me; I love the different varieties we can see throughout the movie, especially the camo-troops on Kashyyyk. Plus, they have the best supporting armour by far, at least going by looks. :D

Plus, seeing the ROTS-troopers firing on full-auto, taking cover in trenches and causing general havoc was great.

The RotS Clonetrooper armour design is simply bitchin', but the OT Stormtrooper armour design edges out slightly as my personal favourite.

I have to say that the ROTS Clonetrooper armor is the most appealing to me. The helmet combines all the best aspects of the other designs, as you pointed out, and the armor is more complex and looks nicer, in my opinion, than the assymetrical and comparatively clunky (fewer, larger pieces) of the Stormtrooper. The different batallions and such having their own paint schemes makes it even cooler.

The use of camouflage as well as the colours indicating rank or regiment also did it for me. I was happy to see a jungle green Clonetrooper for once.

That is a good point. How do you distinguish rank on a OT stormtrooper from a privite, sergeant, or captain?

Perhaps they went to some kind of helmet HUD rank ID system so that enemies could not easily identify officers on the field.

Makes it harder for the snipers too. Heck, that color coding's a pretty bad (horrible) idea if your in sniper country.

That's actually what the shoulder pauldron is for, at least when dealing with civilians. Lets the people know which guys are in charge according to whose got one and what colour.

I do like the Scout Troopers from RotJ, but their camoflaged ancestors have get my vote.

The original Stormtrooper armor is just classic.

But Im going to have to go with RotS just because of all the variety we see.

I personally enjoy RotS look over all the rest. I definitely like how there are all the colors and symbol combinations present.

I tend to divide it into two categories. Of the Prequel era, I prefer the AOTC trooper armor. Of the Classic era, the Scout trooper; there's just something about the helmet in both cases that I like... 8)

I dunno, the camo clone troopers on Kashyyk were really awesome. Seeing camo scout trooopers along with regular camo clone troopers fighting tactically sensible along side with the wookiees was just fucking awesome. Did anyone else see the clonetroopers on the ice planet with the capes?

RotS Clonetroopers just have so much variety that they beat out the other two. My favorite type are the Clone Commanders (the ones drawn from ARCs).

Is the style of their armor significantly different from the standard stormtrooper? Or are you talking about the Phase 1 endoskeleton? :?

Actually, I would have liked to see Snowtroopers on the list. By far my favorite model, just something about that blank facemask....

The classic Clonetrooper suit'll always be the one closest to my heart. While you can't deny that the classic - OT Stormie armor - is nice in its own right (especially the Scout trooper armor) the helmet just felt too chunky, what with that collar around the base, and I'm far more partial to having a single visor as opposed to two segmented eye-pieces. With the ROTS trooper design, again, it's got that bulge, and the way the visor is designed gives off this feeling that the suit itself is just pissed, actual mood of the wearer bedamned.

The only real thing I dislike abou the original Clonetrooper design is that wierd fin on the top of the helmet, which just bugs me to no end. Down the back, I wouldn't have minded, but I just don't like it where it is.

Now, if Royal Guards are allowed to get into the mix, it's a whole 'nother story...

Stormie.

Nothing beats the original, accept no subsitutes.

IMO it just looks cooler, and for some reason it feels 'heavier', more protective than Clonetrooper armor.

I voted for RotS armor, but only because it's the only time when they're painted with camouflage colors, rather than because of the shape of teh armor itself.

The pauldrons being used to let civilians know which stormtrooper is in charge makes sense. If they find things starting to get ugly and it stops being tactically sound for the officers to be marked, they can just rip off the pauldron.

I have to agree. I like the design of their helmets, with the big visors and such.
