Even a prisoner containment shield can cause minor burns (severe enough for non-jedi not even attempt to past thru one), now said shield is not meant to block blaster fire or god forbid anything stronger, so the shield that block the Jedi and Palpatine could easyly strong enough to kill (via burn damage) any human who tries go thru it (while the Jedi might be able prevent this, palpatine can't (well he can but that would blow his cover))

I liked it- Anakin etc inside the shield had no way of getting out, unlike Trek forcefields. I also like the contrast with safety systems during decompression- huge metal blast shutters- BANG. :) And I'm pretty sure the one on the bridge of the IH came down quikcer than the forcefiled in ST:N.
I did a rough count on how long it took for the blast shutters to come down, and it was somewhere around 10 - 14 seconds. Is that a shorter time than ST:N?

In the clone wars cartoon Anakin hand to reach through what was probaly a ray shield to destroy the weather altering device's crystal thinger-ma-bob. Note that he didn't use his real hand to reach through the shield interface. Even when he used the artificial hand (which should be shielded from his flesh by the way) he still experienced etremely painful feedback.

Now, since Jedi can absorb and dissipate energy, if they're unwilling to try walking through that ray shield; you can be sure that if yu or I did we would be fucked! Electrocution in not a nice way to go, hell you could have all you limbs blow off.

Because it would interact with the blade, methinks.

And I think we've found the reason they used ray shields rather than particle shields - they block lightsaber blades.

Also, possibly, particle shields may block the movement of air, and Grievous might have wanted two Jedi to play with himself - as opposed to two suffocated Jedi corpses.

Christ.

Oh sure, a ray shield is optimized to deflect energy-based weaponry, it's not designed to stop some kind of kinetic penetrator from punching through it. Surely that means people MUST be able to go through it, right?

Shit. Even modern day radar fucks people up, so how much more an energy shield that prevents Star Wars-grade weaponry? Sure, a missile can pass through ray shields, a man in a starfighter can also fly his ship through a ray shield. And? So? Therefore? Microwave ovens won't do jack shit to slabs of steel. Microwave ovens won't even harm a dude in some kind of lead suit. Does that mean you can just stick your hand into a microwave oven? No! Does this mean you can stick your hand into a wall of energy that's so concentrated that it can stop weapons that can disintegrate people? No!

And "oooh, show me in the EU or the movies (like REVENGE OF THE SITH where Anakin and Obi-wan are stopped by ray shields) where ray shields harm people111"
Of course I can understand. But you guys are working on the assumption that ray shielding is harmful to humans. And where did you get that assumption? Oh maybe because it glows and it's called a "ray shield" so it has to be harmful to humans... Great justification man... Isn't there anything more specific besides your common sense?
OR MAYBE BECAUSE IT GLOWS AND IT'S CALLED A "RAY SHIELD" AND BECAUSE IT STOPPED TWO BADASS JEDI DEAD IN THEIR TRACKS, Einstein!
Unless I am wrong, the SW universe has a thing called "particle shielding", which is specifically designed to block/deflect non-energy based weapons, i.e. torpedoes. So why didn't Grevious deploy his particle shields instead?
Oh so because it can't stop torpedoes means it can't stop people, even though the movie shows us exactly that?
And how did you figure that humans will be harmed/injured when they pass through ray shielding? Is that a fact or an opinion?
It's a fact, or else why the flying fuck would Obi-wan and Anikin stay inside the shield if they could just walk out? It's a concentrated wall of energy that can stop gigajoules or whatever, in the form of blaster bolts and whatsits. Even radar fucks people up. Microwaves fuck people up. Just because it can't vapourize a warhead (covered in metal) or a fighter plane (covered in metal) or a depleted uranium slug (covered in metal) or a droid (covered in metal) doesn't mean it can't fuck up an unarmored glob of flesh composed mostly of water!

Rommie2006 wrote:Do you have any proof from the movie or EU for that matter that ray shields cause harm to humans? No? Then perhaps you should shut the fuck up.
Rommie, you should read up on logical fallacies, particularly "burden of proof", in this case, otherwise you might have a rough time ahead of you on this board.

Your analytical capabilities might also be called into question. You ask for a situation in which ray shields have been shown to stop people, in order to make sense of.. a scene where ray shields stop people.
Shroom Man, too, has expressed concern over this with greater flair and color than I care to demonstrate. :p

Not to mention his equally precious hostage, Palpatine, who was the entire reason for the Separatists' Coruscanti excursion.

As has already been asked, I wonder why they didn't try to TK the shield projector itself, or use loose debris as missiles against the projector. Perhaps the security ray shield projector is of sturdy construction?

Maybe because the projector is hidden somewhere where they can't find it? I mean, did the ceiling or the floor have visible projector-devices?

I'd imagine the shield generator could be hidden somewhere, but the shield projector ought to be easy to locate.. the point from which the shield is emanating.

I'd lean more toward the shield projector being.. well.. shielded. Either physically or having shielding itself.

It worked, which is more than we can say for Trek "intruder containment" forcefields. ;) There were no exposed components that the Jedi could slash with their lightsabers to get the field to go down, and more importantly, there were no metal bulkheads for Obi-Wan and Anakin to cut open with their lightsabers, like Qui-Gon did in Episode I. For containment of Jedi, who can get through or around physical obstacles with little difficulty, an energy shield is actually a fairly good choice.

Hardcover

pg 112

A sheet of shimmering energy suddenly flared in front of them, blocking the corridor on the far side of the intersection they were trotting across, and Obi-Wan stopped so short that Anakin almost slammed into his back. He reached over and caught Palpatine by the arm. "Careful, sir," he said, low. "Better not touch it till we know what it is."
Obi-Wan unclipped his lightsaber, activated it, and cautiously extended its tip to touch the energy field: an explosive burst of power flared sparks and streaks in all direction, nearly knocking the weapon from his hands. "Ray sheild," he said, more to himself thatn to the others. "We'll have to find a way around-"
...

Obi-Wan nodded, scouling darkly at the ray shield box as though seeing it for the first time; after a moment, he took out his lightsaber again, ignited it, and sank its tip into the deck at his feet. The blade burned through the durasteel plate almost without resistance-and then flared and bucked and spat lightning as it hit a shield in place in a gap below the plate, and almost threw Obi-Wan into the annihilating energy of the ray shield behind him.
"No doubt in the ceiling as well." He looked at the others and sighed. "Ideas?"

The "more" you are looking for is the simple fact that they didn't want to fly through them.

Under suspension of disbelief, if some new material contradicts old suppositions, it is the old suppositions that must go out the window.

That is probably the case, since SW shields are almost always projected through the hull of ships.

It's interesting that the novelization seems to describe a much larger ray shield.. one that's a box where it has a side that is the size of the entire size of the corridor. In the movie it's a small volume, barely enough to contain the three captives.

Sean, a lot of people noted that foolishness. I'll bet he feels pretty silly already. No need to add to his misery :?

I thought it sounded like a large box when I read it, but when I retyped it though, it didn't seem that way. But the projector is visible, or just under the plates and is accessilbe, however protected by it's own shield apparently.
