Prosthetics/Re-making the human body
I'm going into Mechanical Engineering (angling towards robotics) because, among other things, I thought that Doc Ock had one of the best ideas ever articulated in a work of fiction, anywhere - why stick with the basic human body?
We've all seen movies, cartoons, what-have-you with people with extra limbs, robotic eyes, that kind of thing. But, if you could have yourself "augmented" in real life...would you? What would you do? How likely do you think it is that you'll actually be able to do anything like that?

Unless it was full cyborg like Maj. Kusangi from GitS, then no. And even then, prosthetics need maintenance. I'd rather, if I could, have cloned limbs custom made for me if I lost my own. I find there won't be any substitute for the human body - which is the most amazing machine there is - anytime soon.

Id prefer cloned bits, but Ill work with robotics until then.
heres hoping I dont lose any limbs, obviously, but I might be up for an internet connection inside my head, global reception.

I fundamentally feel that machines > human body, particularly because it's easier to make a machine body to custom specifications. I think it would be sweet to get artificial limbs provided they were good enough at simulating tactile perception.
But extra limbs... gahhh, I'd have to think on that.

I would have wanted to go for a machine-based body. All the "bells and whistles" of robotics / cybernetics / AUgmentations.
However, my new body will now be vulnerable to the ultimate technology nullifer: Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP).
Sure, our own bodies still have maintenance requirements (Nutrition, excercise, keeping a healthy body etc.), but at least they are practically unaffected by EMP.

I'd rather genetic engineering to robotic upgrades. If it's electronic, it's going to require maintenance, batteries, a whole lot of hassle.
"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

And organic bodies require food, medical attention, and all sorts of other hassles.Predator wrote:I'd rather genetic engineering to robotic upgrades. If it's electronic, it's going to require maintenance, batteries, a whole lot of hassle.

Those things are readily taken care of by your body. One cannot complain about food since I happen to like good food. And if you have the medical ability to graft new cybernetic limbs this good, you have the technology to produce decent clone limbs.Drooling Iguana wrote: And organic bodies require food, medical attention, and all sorts of other hassles.
Cloned limbs or something like automail.

Yep - but, unless you're talking about replacing your entire body - including your brain - with electronic equivalents, you'll require some form of sustainance and occasionally medical attention anyway. Those who opt for robotic body parts have to worry about both sustainance/medical attention and maintenance/power supply, the latter's no concern for me.Drooling Iguana wrote:And organic bodies require food, medical attention, and all sorts of other hassles.Predator wrote:I'd rather genetic engineering to robotic upgrades. If you want the cyborg stuff don't go into mechanical engineering, usually it's the biologists/doctors who are implementing cyborg tech.Molyneux wrote:I'm going into Mechanical Engineering (angling towards robotics) because, among other things, I thought that Doc Ock had one of the best ideas ever articulated in a work of fiction, anywhere - why stick with the basic human body?
That's my personal impression though working in a robotics company so I could be wrong.
Mostly the mechanical engineers end up doing automation stuff, with as little human interaction as possible...

Even complex and sophisticated electronics can be shielded against EMP. I doubt that you'll be walking down the street and suddenly collapse into a heap just because a power box blew out.Adjudicator wrote:I would have wanted to go for a machine-based body. Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.

Besides, you'll be resistant to radiation. It's a trade off, only you'll get laser-death eyes, a Darth Vader voice transformer, and the ability to morph into a gigantic Power Rangers Dino-bot !!!!!!

Damnit! It's too late to change, I think...and I don't think I'd do too well in bioengineering.Spoonist wrote:If you want the cyborg stuff don't go into mechanical engineering, usually it's the biologists/doctors who are implementing cyborg tech.Molyneux wrote:I'm going into Mechanical Engineering (angling towards robotics) because, among other things, I thought that Doc Ock had one of the best ideas ever articulated in a work of fiction, anywhere - why stick with the basic human body?

Maybe I could just work on powered armor, then?
