Transparant Bus Project

Post by Dangermouse »

This is kinda neat. Two students in North Carolina, US, hosted an art exhibit called "Roads in Sight." Part of the project involved wrapping two of the campus buses with a photographic rendering of the two main bus stops (assuming a vinyl-like wrapping) so that the buses would blend in with the background at the bus stops. A short blurb about the exhibit is here.

The actual view of the bus in front of one of the bus stops:

Pretty interesting. :)

Edit: If a mod wants to fix the spelling in the title, I will bow humbly in their presence.

Now just wrap the buses in OLED sheets that are hooked to cameras on the opposite side of the bus, generating real-time imagery. Oh, wait, that'd be called... lemme see... a traffic hazard.

While it's really cool that they can do this, it would also be incredibly dangerous in practice.

The bus looks transparent only from one angle because its nothing more then coated with a picture of the background. Come summer time and it will stick out like a sore thumb even if placed in the right location and right angle.

Wow, that is kinda trippy, and cool. I want an invisible bus.

The exhibit has since gone down but originally the idea was to have microphones set up in the two buses at certain seats so that those people could communicate with the other bus. I don't think it was finished in time though.

Wow. It's almost like an Amish cloaking device.

I glanced at the picture before reading the actual OP, and was excited that perhaps it was a practical "cloak" that simulated whatever background the bus had. Shame it wasn't. :?

I thought it was painted on when I saw it until I read the description... too bad painted on would be even more impressive :)

EDIT: As for the Pimp My Ride idea... I would sooo do that to our new car so it matched our house and scenery around it, of course that would have to wait until we got a new car and our own house ;)

Edit#2 actually, no I wouldn't. I was saying that mainly because the car would be camouflaged but I realised it wouldn't be camouflaged at night or whenever I went anywhere else, and people would think it was cool and would probably want to steal it even more :( Darn that was a cool idea
