Scott Adams's God's Debris

Post by Construct »

Anyone read this book? I thought it was pretty much a piece of junk and was about as intellectually stimulating as a cheese sandwich. However he claims his story has some kind of logical flaw and I haven't given it much thought but has any of you who have read it thought about what it might be?

Dunno. I've come to regard Scott Adams as a bit of a fringe member of the woo-woo crowd.

Should read "The Dilbert Future". Most of the book is just witty observations with the usual wry sarcastic humour.

Then his last chapter is the biggest load of oddness I've ever read.
"Oh no, oh yeah, tell me how can it be so fair
That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"

- A.B. Original, Report to the Mist

"I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

What does it say?
The End of Suburbia
"If more cars are inevitable, must there not be roads for them to run on?"
-Robert Moses

"The Wire" is the best show in the history of television. Watch it today.

I couldn't get my head around it, something about affirmations. And how if you don't know about the contents of a box, it can change the contents. Some really intense shit.

I haven't touched that chapter since I read it a few years ago.

Yeah. He believes that human thought can change your immediate surroundings. Affirmations is basically writing down something that you want many times and supposedly it will become reality because your thoughts affect your environment.

There was also some crazy shit involving gravity and how everything from the tiniest subatomic particle is growing in size.

He wasn't saying that everything in the universe was doubling in size constantly, he was just using that to illustrate a point on how something like that could create the illusion of gravity.

If everything was doubling in size constantly, how could you tell there was any difference, besides the effects of gravity?
"If one needed proof that a guitar was more than wood and string, that a song was more than notes and words, and that a man could be more than a name and a few faded pictures, then Robert Johnson’s recordings were all one could ask for."

You wouldn't. That's his point.

Which is rather nonsensical. But I love his Dilbert stuff and the Principle and Future books are good, bar that last chapter as stated.

After reading The Dilbert Future, I gotta say the guy is pretty damn witty, and that last chapter was arguably my favorite part of the book.

Whether or not it accurately describes reality is to be debated, but it's still a good read.

I just found the God's Debris book full of logical leaps. The whole premise was flawed. It wanted to come off as intellectual but it was just annoyingly simple. Maybe I've studied too much philosophy to be able to relax and just enjoy it... :)
