Palpy tells Luke he's going to kill him in a cold triumphant manner. He sneers, he smiles, he grimaces with effort as he kicks up the lightning a notch but he certainly doesn't act like Doctor Doom on fucking Crack. He cackles in other scenes with glee but when he gets down to business he's as cold as ice. Here we have some cackling moron who looks like a six year old girl holding his hands to his mouth as he enters mortal combat with Yoda as well as delivering a line like "Unlimited Power."
With all due respect, that's bullshit. I watched ROTJ literally the same day I watched ROTS for the first time and it's the same guy, only more energetic. If you honestly think there was nothing maniacal about the way he behaved in ROTJ, then I can only surmise that you were temporarily blinded while watching the film.
I'm not shitting on your interpretation of him or imlpying you have some godamned handicap nor am I saying "oh noos GL has shit on canon." But I WILL say that to me that Unlimited Power bullshit sounded awful coming from Palpatine. He didn't scream and cackle maniacally as he deep roasted Luke. "And now...young Skywalker...you will die." vs. "UNLIMITED POWER!!!!" That's what it comes down to when looking at similar situation - Palpatine about to deep roast someone he hates - and line delivery. IMO That's not Palpatine minus 20 years. That's Palpatine the four color comic villain.
And yes I know Star Wars is supposed to be Operatic and cheesy. I didn't like the fucking line. Sue me.

Palpatine is a fucking four-colour comic villain, dumb-ass. You just have rose-coloured glasses on when you watch the OT. And if your only point was that you just didn't personally like the line, fine. Say that. But noooo, you have to spew all of that film-critic bullshit about how there's some logical reason behind your subjective dislike.
"It's not evil for God to do it. Or for someone to do it at God's command."- Jonathan Boyd on baby-killing
"you guys are fascinated with the use of those "rules of logic" to the extent that you don't really want to discussus anything."- GC
"I do not believe Russian Roulette is a stupid act" - Embracer of Darkness
"Viagra commercials appear to save lives" - tharkûn on US health care.
Jez-us, what's so bad about that one line? If you can't see Palpatine seriously saying that, then you obviously missed the part where he's a power mad, criminal mastermind with superhuman powers. The critique of the Force lightning is just stupid since he does the same damn thing in RotJ and no one went "OH MY GOD! Little girl!"
Personally, the most excellent scene of him throwing several senate floater pods at his "little green freak" sums up how batshit insane Palpy is when he gets going and his true power.
"You were the chosen one! You were supposed to bring balance to the force, not lead it into darkness!" At this point, IMHO, Ewan stole the show, the delivery was perfect, just the right anount of pleading, anger and sorrow.
The UNLIMITED POWER!!!!111Shift111+1 was done just right. Remember he's just about to achieve his ultimate goal and destroy the only entity that can challenge him, he's got every right to gloat and lord it up.
