Would you fight in the Idiran War ?
Assuming you were a Culture citizen during the Idiran War with the requirement for getting into Contact, would you get 'enlisted' to fight three meters tall killing machines in armored suit with planet-blasting warships running around ? Would it be for ideological reasons or mere entertainment ( boring paradise ) ?
This is the beginning of the war ( circa Consider Phlebas ).

The was was mainly fought by ships and drones.
"They suggested that such enormously powerful and intellectually refined entities ought to have names with a little more gravitas, to reflect their near-god-like status; the immediate and sustained reaction of one of the Culture's ship manufacturies was to name all its subsequent vessels things like: Stood Far Back When The Gravitas Was Handed Out; Gravitas, What Gravitas?; Gravitas... Gravitas... No, Don't Help Me, I'll Get It In A Moment...; Gravitas Free Zone, etc "

The Culture can win just fine without meatbag volunteers. Therefore there is no reason to enlist for moral reasons, and I consider myself better adjusted than enlisting just to watch things get blown up, so no, I have nothing to do with the war, unless the Idirans ruin my day by forcing me to move.

You skipped the "Fight for the Idirans" option. Not that I'd take it, just for completeness.
Most of the human combatants in the war were just either just observers or Contact special forces. Sightseeing doesn't really interest me and I don't think I'd be good enough for the jobs Contact has to do. I'd just hop on a GSV and watch the war on the news in between parties.

I'd probably join up with Contact and fight. I like the concept of living as you wish and would like to kick some tyrannical religious-zealot ass to keep it going. I don't know what use I'd be until being max genofixed out the wahzoo and then get in some training, but I would even go SC if they'd have me.
Afterwards I could retire from war for a time, content in having earned my bliss for the next hundered or so years, by which point I'd get bored again.

If I were threatened and could be useful, then I would give my service to Contact, otherwise I'd stay out of the way.
