The "When I was a kid...." Thread

Post by TrailerParkJawa »

When I was a kid:

1. I remember when pay phones were a dime.
2. I remember seeing Air National Guard F-106's do a fly by.
3. I remember when the hostages came home from Iran.
4. I remember where I was when I heard the Space Shuttle blew up.
5. I remember when PG-13 was introduced.
6. I remember Carter as president even if very vaguely.

What do you remember ?

ps: I never had to walk to school in the snow, like everyone else older than me did. Even those people from Arizona.

Umm...Though I'm technically still a minor, being only 16...

When I was a kid I remember,

When the Atari came out, and 4-bit graphics were king
When a multitude of colors did NOT represent homosexuality
When people were more shallow, than stupid
When the world had West and East Germany, and the USSR
When AIDS was actually beginning to be understood, instead of being God's plague on gays
When Magic: TG was just coming into existence
When a Commodore 64 was God

-What I say here is forever being recorded. Wonderful, isn't it?

You're 16? You can't remember about the Atari or the Com64.

I saw newsfilm of Robert Kennedy dying on the floor of a Los Angeles hotel.

I saw the Vietnam War every night on TV.

I saw Neil Armstrong set foot on the surface of the moon.

Sure I could, I got an Atari when I was around 4 or 5...And my friend's brother had a Commodore 64 some time during my early years.

And Pat, don't you know that the moon landing was a hoax?! You sheep! Damn ye!

I remeber:

When the Nintendo came out
When the USSR fell apart
When the Gulf War started
When Bill Clinton seemed like an honest guy
When Nirvana was unique
When musicians actually played music

Yes, but I believe it didn't quite sound as good, though the lyrics actually had meaning.

1. Saw the Reagan/Carter election live on TV and had no clue what they were saying but knew it was important. (Had recently immigrated into the US)

2. Saw my first porno centerfold when I was in the 1st grade because my parents owned a liquor store and I had Time to sneak a look. Had no clue what I was looking at but somehow knew it was important.

3. Saw my first dead body, or rather, what remained of it (chunks of bone and brain) but unquestioningly hosed the blood and brains off of the parking lot due to orders from my dad to do so.

4. Conducted my first crime scene investigation when I determined that the jackass who left brains scattered on the parking lot were from a drunk biker who had too much Stoli, crashed into a 4 foot high brick wall at 40+ mph, got thrown off his bike, and crashed head first into a steel lamppost in front of my dad's liquor store.

5. Learned the meaning of irony for a drunk biker to kill himself in front of a liquor store.

I remember the shuttle explosion like it was yesterday.
I remember the Atari2600, Intellivision, Nintendo
I remember Nixon (vaguely), Ford, Carter, Regan, Bush, Clinton, Bush.
I remember when Elvis, Lennon and John Belushi died.
I remember when life was much easier.
I remember when you had to wait in line for gas and pay $2 a gallon.
I remember 1976, our bicentennial.
I remember seeing Star Trek, the first movie and being scared.
I remember seeing ESB and falling in love ("I love you." "I know").
I remember thinking Indiana Jones was just so cool.
I remember Ferris Beuler doing what I always wanted to do.

BTW, the Atari console came out in 1975. There is NO WAY IN HELL you could remember when it was released, kiddo. And Nintendo came out in 1985. You're JUST old enough.

My favorite game was the Western one, where you'd go after the computer, but could shoot out the cacti too. :D

You probably do, but it's years old. I still have mine too. It was the original.

I remember when pay phones were 25 cents.

I remember when Nintendo was cool.

I remember He-Man.

I remember Thundercats.

I remember GI Joe.

Hmm. I guess TV does take away your attention span for remembering things.

The original Atari came out in 1977. You remember having one, not just when it came out. :)

Disco was new
Star Wars was new
They advertised the Chevrolet downsized models of '77 as the "New Chevrolet"
We were terrified of the Soviet Union
Tall Ships in NY harbor, July 4, 1976 had me glued to the screen
The Arab oil embargo
I went nuts for the Viking mission
TOS aliens scared me

Isnt it interesting how things change? I remember the "Better Dead than Red" t-shirts and stuff like that. Red Dawn was such a cool movie.
Now I can say I view Russia with a pretty big shrug of indifference.

Now there's a whole generation of kids who have no idea! When I was really little, I had nightmares about atomic bombs all the time. Even now, with the Invasion of Iraq immenent, the war on terror, Sept. 11, I still feel safer.
