No, they don't. Tachikomas are no better than any of the other expressions of the inexplicable Japanese urge to masturbate furiously to mecha and the sympathetic hardons developed by their American otaku.Molyneux wrote:HAH! It also reminds me somewhat of the spiderbike units from Command and Conquer...
There's no way they could move that fast in any universe where our laws of physics and mechanics were rigorously obeyed. About the most they'd be capable of is that sluggish bouncy walk they use. The only way they could go fast on wheels is if they were jet propelled. And on wheels that small, bearing that much load, the bearings would be ground to goo in no time flat.

Aaaanyway...their may be flaws in the design, but the *concept* is still good. They just need to change the wheel design and give it a better propulsion system.
IIRC, didn't the grey tank (that looked like a larger version of them) have air jets or something when it needed to move quickly, rather than wheels?
Ceci n'est pas une signature.
Regardless of how far ahead any technology goes, I just can't imagine any lastability with the cyclic stresses placed on the various load-bearing structures in a walking machine.. not to mention the inherent inefficiences in the way it'll move.
Walking machines (especially humanoid ones) will always be completely impractical if not impossible, but would also be cool. In fiction.
The machines in Heavy Gear are nice

Can I add this quote to my sig?Mayabird wrote:Look, if Godzilla ever challenges Tokyo to a dancing contest, Japan is going to need a giant walking robot that can dance in order to avert massive sparking exploding seizure-inducing destruction.

I do hope someone does build them, not because they will have any purpose, but because I want to see them fall over, thrash about madly and tear themselves to pieces as their control system goes insane.
