Making of Revenge of the Sith by J.W. RInzer
I just received this book from B&N and started flipping through it. Several things caught my eye right away. In the opening chapters it discusses the various drafts the script went through and several scenes jumped out at me in particular:
In the penultimate draft of the script the following is contained different from the earlier drafts:
In the final duel between Anakin and Obi Wan, when Anakin is lying on the ground legless and crippled he begs
Anakin: "Help me Master."
Obi Wan: "Don't ask me, Anakin...you're evil. You bring nothing but pain and suffering. I can't help you."
Anakin: "I hate you!"
WOW. That brings a different kind of emotion to that scene. Obi Wan turns his back on Anakin in a colder sort of way and it also brings more resonance to Luke's quest to redeem his father. Everyone else turned their back on Anakin but not Luke.
In the movie the "I hate you" exclamation makes Anakin seem more mindless and raving because Obi Wan doesn't deny him aid but it also shows that Anakin is not ireddemable when he asks for help so perhaps for those reasons the scene was paired down.
Also GL wrote that Padme dies of a broken heart. No vaccuum cleaner life force suction power of doom thank you very much.
Also it was scripted that Leia as a baby was held up to her mother as she died and that Padme gave her a sad smile. Thus Leia's statement that she remembered her mother being sad in ROTJ.
Mustafar was also a larger blood bath with Anakin killing Captain Typho and Padme's handmaiden in a rage. GL later paired it down so that they were forbidden from coming with Padme.
And in a weird statement describing how Sidious didn't get all of Plagueis secrets the answer is really simple. He forgot. Yep. Sidious FORGOT the secret of life creation.
Here's the exchange:
Palpatine: He became so powerful...the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually he did, of course...Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, the his apprentice killed him in his sleep. (smiles) Plagueis never saw it coming. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself. According to the legend it was a power his apprentice found no value in. So the ability to save loved ones was lost with Plagueis the wise.
UGH.
And in very early drafts of the script Yoda and a very young Han Solo worked together to discover the location of Greivous. Thank GOD that didn't make it past early drafts.
This is all from a 15 minute skimming of the book. I have a feeling I'll really enjoy reaidng this one. I'm almost done with the novelization as well and might be posting my observations of it soon.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, and is also wrong. Sidious says, specifically, "Only one has achieved that power" which is Plagueis, which means Sidious never did.And in a weird statement describing how Sidious didn't get all of Plagueis secrets the answer is really simple. He forgot. Yep. Sidious FORGOT the secret of life creation.

I agree with you 100%. Whose to say that either Plagueis kept that one last secret to himself and Palpatine didn't realize it until going through Plagueis' stuff "hey...what's this stuff about life creation...you bastard!!!"Illuminatus Primus wrote:That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, and is also wrong. or quite simply Plagueis taught Palaptine and Palpatine just didn't 'get it'. Obviously the secret involves ALOT of introspection and research and I don't see Palpatine the younger doing much of that (the older definately)

You didn't notice Palpatine's barely-concealed glee when he talks about how his apprentice killed him in his sleep?

That was just Palpatine attempting to mask the story. I got the impression, through his body language, facial expressions and tone of voice that he was reminiscing about his dead master.Sir Sirius wrote:Are you sure that Plagueis was Palpatines master? I got the impression from the film that Plagueis the Wise and his abilities were somekind of a Sith legend (i.e. something that happened long ago, if at all).

I quite liked Capt. Typho and the handmaiden being killed. Too bad that was left out.

Yeah, in the original scripts of 'Star Wars', Anakin Skywalker was Anakin Starkiller too.Stravo wrote:Also GL wrote that Padme dies of a broken heart. No vaccuum cleaner life force suction power of doom thank you very much.

Okay... I don't know what you're trying imply by that statement. It's very clear that the original drafts of the scripts by no means dictate the story, characters or specific events in the final script, including your implied suggestion that this early script somehow sugests that Padme died of a broken heart in the final version of Lucas' film despite Darth Sidious informing Vader that he killed her as shown in the fucking movie.Stravo wrote:Yeah you're right she didn't die in the final version of the film.Pint0 Xtreme wrote:Yeah, in the original scripts of 'Star Wars', Anakin Skywalker was Anakin Starkiller too.Stravo wrote:Also GL wrote that Padme dies of a broken heart. However, I'm not going to stop you from clinging on to early, obsolete drafts of the movie to justify your version of the final story. You can embrace your own ignorance as much as you please.
Re: Making of Revenge of the Sith by J.W. RInzer
Funny thing about that jackass is that its in the final draft of the script. Its not a concept that didn't make it into the final draft or that was never filmed like your completely irrelevant Starkilller reference.Pint0 Xtreme wrote:Okay... The script says Padme dies of a broken heart. She dies in the film. There is no contradiction to what the script calls for. But you keep on seeing things that the writer obviously didn't intend in his script for the movie because it makes you feel better.

Really, smart ass. Last I checked, penultimate != final.Stravo wrote:Funny thing about that jackass is that its in the final draft of the script. Its not a concept that didn't make it into the final draft or that was never filmed like your completely irrelevant Starkilller reference.
"In the penultimate draft of the script the following is contained different from the earlier drafts: "
Unless you can find it in the FINAL script that Padme dies of a broken heart, you can stop waving previous scripts drafts in my face as if they have as much say as if they were the final draft. The script says Padme dies of a broken heart. She dies in the film. There is no contradiction to what the script calls for. But you keep on seeing things that the writer obviously didn't intend in his script for the movie because it makes you feel better.
Unless it´s said out loud, it doesn´t count. The only cause is implied to be Vader. That´s it.The script says Padme dies of a broken heart. She dies in the film. There is no contradiction to what the script calls for. But you keep on seeing things that the writer obviously didn't intend in his script for the movie because it makes you feel better.

I actually went through most of it, but kept from reading into detail so I wouldn't be spoiled. Now I can sit down on the actual story part of the book and read all the things. Supposedly, in the back of the book where the web address is, gives you a site where the last chapter or two chapters are. They were written during the final stages of the film, but weren't finished before the book was published. Check out the part about Qui Gon. I was actually upset that part didn't make it in.

But what if it's not from an old script? What Stravo said makes it sound like it isn't from anything outdated.Pint0 Xtreme wrote:Well, DUH! You win the irony award. In that case then it's simply obvious from the film that she died from a broken heart, you nerd.
Oh, and Pinto...what evidence is there that Vader killed Padme? Eh? Aside from Palpatine's comment, which is clearly designed to cause Vader to sever all emotional ties to his previous life? Oh, that's right...none whatsoever.

If they are contradicted! Anakin Starkiller was useless because it was turned into Anakin Skywalker. Nothing contradicts Padme dying of a broken heart, mmmkay?Pint0 Xtreme wrote:Well, DUH! You can't use old scripts to describe the final version of the story.
