Pint, if you shot somebody in the gut and they died two days later, you're responcible for killing them. Same basic idea applies here, except that Padme's dwindling will to live also comes into factor.

Uh.... yeah, I think you forgot Darth Vader's reference to feeling her alive. Most of the evidence for Darth Vader killing her is simply anecdotal but it's still far more conclusive than your baseless theory that Palpatine's comment was meant to sever all emotional ties, not to mention how ridiculously pointless such a comment would be if Palpatine did not know the actual outcome of Padme's health.HemlockGrey wrote:Oh, and Pinto...what evidence is there that Vader killed Padme? Eh? Aside from Palpatine's comment, which is clearly designed to cause Vader to sever all emotional ties to his previous life? Oh, that's right...none whatsoever.

False analogy. Someone who dies from a gun wound clearly was killed by the act of being shot. Padme was fucking healthy (as stated by the medical droid), meaning the force choke did not significantly adversely affected her health and ability to give birth. Something else killed her and 'a broken heart' severe enough to immediately destroy all vital signs within such a drastic short period of time is completely ridiculous, especially when in light of the evidence that Vader killed her through his anger within the Force.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Pint, if you shot somebody in the gut and they died two days later, you're responcible for killing them. OMFG, I'm sure glad that crap never made it into the script.Stravo wrote: Anakin: "Help me Master."

I'd previously gone with the idea that Anakin and Padme were tied through the Force, and stress from his suffering (being burnt, then operated on while conscious) were what caused her death.
Considering the excerpt from the penultimate version of the script, it seems logical that the final version of the script has not changed it; nothing in the movie contradicts it. Writer's intent is probably that Padme died of a broken heart , even though she wasn't injured badly enough to cause her death.
Now I think I'll go with the "broken heart" thingy, gushily romantic though it may be. I guess the Force attack plus the stress of childbirth wasn't sufficient to kill, but she'd also lost her will to live.
Even if that's a case, Anakin did kill her. He not only Force choked her, he's also the cause of her loss of will to live. Either way, every contributing factor can be attributed to him. As always, Sidious didn't have to lie.

As I'm sure everyone agrees, I'm glad the "help me master" lines were cut. It takes too much responsibility off Anakin for his own actions further down the line.
Still, if Anakin had begged for help, would Obi-Wan have helped him? Recall that Anakin had just slaughtered every Jedi in the temple, including the younglings.
I guess it would have made the undertones of Luke's quest more powerful, though, and tied in with Obi-Wan's refusal to even consider Vader as redeemable in the OT.
Perhaps Obi-Wan would have helped him.. but in the end it doesn't matter what Obi-Wan would have done; asking for help then would merely be self-serving.

I was more concerned with the fact that it was just piss-poor writing. It lacked any smidgin of the emotion that we luckily saw in the movies, where Obi-Wan almost broke down at what had happened.
"Don't ask me [to help you], Anakin... you're evil!"
WTF? Obi-Wan could just as well have used the words "poo poo head" and "big meanie".

Agreed.Eleas wrote:I was more concerned with the fact that it was just piss-poor writing. It lacked any smidgin of the emotion that we luckily saw in the movies, where Obi-Wan almost broke down at what had happened.
In the screen version, it looked like Obi-Wan was at least considering pulling Anakin up off the bank of the river of lava, but Anakin was consumed by rage and hate... even in what might be his final moments, he wanted nothing more than to destroy Obi-Wan in revenge. As it turned out, it was a much more powerful scene, and more believable than a weak Anakin pathetically begging for help.
A real tragedy, if it did. I'll bet it would put many of us in tears.Ender wrote:Yep, horrible shame if that scan of the TL comparison on page 167 turned up here.

Butterfingers! I added a link too! I'd better go sulk in a corner.
I hereby harshly condemn this act of wanton linking. I would certainly not stoop so low as to actively deify Clone Sergeant for what he has inadvertantly done.Clone Sergeant wrote:Oops! Lucas discusses his dialogue, readly admitting he's bad at it but shrugs it off in the following quote:
Wow. Dialogue as a sound effect. No wonder we've been assaulted with some attrocious stuff in the past. And of course some truly memorable ones as well. The last thing that will be dealt with is the dialogue, because that you can change on the set or even afterwards- you know, I'm not known for my dialogue. (laughs) I think of it as a sound effect, a rythm, a vocal chorus in the overall soundtrack. Mostly everything is visual."
