Actually, if you re-read Shadows of the Empire, it was implied that Vader could have healed himself with the force, if he could only have completely given himself over to the dark side. In the book he actually regrows some of his damage lung tissue temporarily.

Its entirely possible that over coming his injuries was part of Vaders training, and that he never reached his full darkside potential.

Clearly most injuries are bone or flesh wounds, but nervous damage tends to be severe, crippling, and almost always irreparable except in science fiction.

Probably not for much longer. Given the way current biotech is going I'd expect real-world nerve repair technology to surpass UFP levels by 2050 at the latest.

Nerve repair, not flesh repair. The federation is established as not being able to restore a crushed spinal column to functionality, something that we will probably be able to do by 2050.

I don't think Bacta is quite as slow as it's occasionally depicted to be. In Star by Star Mara breaks her ankle, puts a bacta-cast or something on it, and proceeds to snap-kick a YV warrior with that foot within an hour. No ill effects are mentioned, although she does have to take time later for the wound to "properly" heal or something.

I find that to be an isolated incident, although I would have to go back and read the incident again to know for sure. I find it likely that Mara's ability with the Force aided her ability to use damaged limbs more effectively, and to assist her in healing. There are many other examples of incidents in which it did take much longer periods of time to cure injuries than that.
