My personal favorite is obviously the imperial star destoryer II with the mars battlecruiser a close second, I love their excallent all-around abilites.

Re: best cruiser from sci-fi
Yeah, the ISD is relatively well designed. It makes for a good Heavy Cruiser. The Aliegance SSD would be a Battle Cruiser or Pocket Battleship while the Executor, Sovereign, and Eclipse would be varrying levels of Battleship. The VSD is likely a Light Cruiser while the Strike Cruisers, Carracks, Nebulons, and Interdictors take the Escort Destroyer and Light Destroyer roles. The Corellian Corvette would be a Frigate while anything between frigate and fighter is likely a Corvette type ship.starfury wrote:My personal favorite is obviously the imperial star destoryer II with the mars battlecruiser a close second, I love their excallent all-around abilites.

I've always found the Minbari Sharlin Cruisers to be beautiful!!! Its gorgeous with a smooth organic look and looks different from most cruisers we see in sci fi. After that I would have to say the Constitution Refit Ent Nil and A. The best looking ship in sci fi ever.
Wherever you go, there you are.

And built of Structure Tissue Paper (Tm). It's seriously fragile, perhaps the black star was a freak hit but they're too easly broken for me.Stravo wrote:I've always found the Minbari Sharlin Cruisers to be beautiful!!! If we define a "cruiser" to be a midsize ship (as per a modern "cruiser"), that eliminates any fighters or light warships with a crew of a dozen or less (like a BOP, which is basically a space PT boat). It would also eliminate monster starships such as the Death Star.
I'd say my favourite is the ISD (of course). Its design is one of the better ones, and I love the heavy-metal look. I also liked the look of the Colonial Battlestars in BG. In Star Trek, I am emotionally attached to the E-A because I was a longtime TOS fan, but it's still a piss-poor design (come on, those ridiculous long skinny struts are awful; the design is so bad that they make it hard to build a scale model of the Enterprise which holds together, and the toys invariably lose their nacelles). In B5, my favourite is the Narn heavy cruiser; it's got clean lines and it doesn't have the rotating section of the E-A ships or the silly fragile fins of the Minbari ships.

As bad as the E-A design was from an egineering standpoint, it still looked like a real Naval warship and still looked damn good at the same time.Darth Wong wrote:If we define a "cruiser" to be a midsize ship (as per a modern "cruiser"), that eliminates any fighters or light warships with a crew of a dozen or less (like a BOP, which is basically a space PT boat). A good ST canadite for cruiser would be the Miranda.

Warlock class is quite nice, some spindly bits, but a clear design philosophy.Darth Wong wrote:In B5, my favourite is the Narn heavy cruiser; it's got clean lines and it doesn't have the rotating section of the E-A ships or the silly fragile fins of the Minbari ships.

Was that the class Nike was in, or the class Fearless was in? I prefer Nike myself, even if it had that fusion reactor problem on trials.Stormbringer wrote:Honorverse Reliant-class Battlecruisers!

Nike, was a subclass of the Reliants. Fearless 1 was an old Corageous-class, Fearless 2 was a Star KnightThe Dark wrote:Was that the class Nike was in, or the class Fearless was in? It could be argued that the struts for warp nacelles in ST are akin to the masts for sails in ancient ships. Sure, you don't *want* to have such a weak structure if you can help it... but perhaps they can't help it? LOL...
Likewise, I think the "fins" on B5 ships are there for "gravimetric" propulsion instead of the usual action/reaction drive.
The Warlock is a "destroyer" in B5, but it really is one of their largest front-line warships. The Omega-class is the only EA warship with a rotating section. None of the other warships feature it (Olympus-class corvette, Nova-class Dreadnaught, etc).
I rather liked the Nova... it's lined with massive guns all over. It's also able to fire 16 of its 22 guns in its forward arc.

Minbari Sharlins are the only Younger Race ship observed to have their hull stop a Shadow Battlecrab's beam weapon (see "Into the Fire", when two Shadow beams hit roughly the same area on the lower part of the top fin for half a second. The beams don't penetrate).Stormbringer wrote: And built of Structure Tissue Paper (Tm). It's seriously fragile, perhaps the black star was a freak hit but they're too easly broken for me.

The obligatory answer is the original ISD.
But I really really like the Confederation-class Dreadnought Concordia from Wing Commander 2.
