I liked Romulus myself. Lots of parks and ponds and lakes interspersed through the city. And lots of architectural variety too. And those humongous awe-inspiring monuments.
My vote went to Romulus . . . can't you tell?

why, there are modern cities that have similar rules, like Hershey penssilvania. They have rules making the it so the town looks like a bavarian city. Or many cities in Germany and Austria that insist tht all new buildings blend in with the old parts of the city. If you have a population tha loves a certian nastalgia or motife it is easy to imagine that the building would all go togather new or old.Gil Hamilton wrote:Maybe, but you'd think more cosmopolitian cities and worlds wouldn't have such archaic restrictions. Of course, with the case of StarWars, it's entirely possible that many planets lost many cities during the civil war that formed the Empire, so the buildings were thrown up at the same time by a group of designers, so they'd have a similar feel, but on cities that hadn't been destroyed and had been their for centuries, you'd expect some difference in buildings.Isolder74 wrote:Unless of course there are zoning laws in place restricting designers to a particular motif in their structures. A good example is Jerusalam, all buildings have to be faced with limestone or at least look like they are. Even the most modern buildings in the area still fit into the looks of the older structures on the city.

Hershey Pennsylvannia is hardly what I'd call cosmopolitian, you know. The reason for the Bavarian architecture is due to, when the city charter was written several centuries ago, the area was inhabited by Pennsylvannia Dutch. It's also one of the few places in America where it was more common to speak German than it was to speak English until about 80 years ago. Hardly very modern a place, not counting their expert chocolate making abilities. Compare Hershey with Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, the two major Pennsylvannian cities (Harrisburg is a postage stamp, I'm sorry to say).Isolder74 wrote:why, there are modern cities that have similar rules, like Hershey penssilvania. The issue is cultural diversity. Cities that have lots of cultural diversity tend to have varied architecture. You'd expect this with a vengeance on, say, Alderaan which has been part of a galactic community for thousands of years. Cultural influences on such a scale has to have some effect on the architecture.

Architecture itself goes through many different styles over the course of time. just look how buildings are being built in any city undergoing a renaisance. the new buildings in LA for example are very diverse. the styles used also change for example check out the new buildings being planned for New York or Chicago. In the not so recent past it seemed architecture was going to become borring. The international Style (the glass box building) seemed all too common. this is because steel frame buildings tend to take on this basic shape. the glass box gave maximum space with minimun design and cost . in bidding for designs the bottom line is very demanding.
the past architects used pencil and pen on paper to design with. this restricted creativity because we get attached to the lines on the page and erasing lines is not easy. the computer has chaned this compleetly we are seeing very radical new designs made posible only because of the computer. whatch as citiis are compeeting for architects like Frank Ghery who builds anything but boring buildings.

The Real Frank Lloyd Wright was also fond of California.FettKyle wrote:To me Coruscant has only been scratch as far as what we have observed. Chances are there is much more to see but as a place to visit it will be one of the most beautiful planet there is. otherwise as for a place to live I would be right here in good old California the best state is the USA
My favoruit of his Buildings next to the Price Tower is the Marin County Civic Center.

yeah, and only mile high dreams exist on present day earth.Darth Yoshi wrote:I have to vote for Corsucant. Any planet with buildings over a mile high has good architecture.
there are several designs of buildings a mile tall that are practical yet remain really big dreams.

Let's look at the candidates...
Coruscant: Has a nice cyber-punk touch to it.
Corellia: Too bland.
Alderaan: Now that's what I call Art Deco!
Nar Shadda: I can't get a good look at it - but it looks very... alien.
Cloud City: Appears very, very high-tech, but looks too much like Coruscant.
Naboo: Never really liked it.... it just looks so old-fashioned to me. And if it's gonna look like ancient architecture, please add some ziggurats or other majestic-looking features.
Star Trek Earth: Appears to have been designed by the Raëlian Movement. (Author's note: You might not get it if you haven't seen the embassy for extraterrestrial diplomats, which the Raëlian Movement plans to build)
Qo'nos: Dark, brooding and sinister.... but it appears to lack something.
Romulus: Now THIS is what Retro-Ancient architecture should look like!!
Could easily be Imperium of Mankind architecture from Warhammer 40K.
Cardassia: Same for Nar Shadda.
Although I do like Qo'nos, Romulus and Alderaan, my vote goes to a certain other planet. Here's some hints: It's eternally rainy, inhabited by creatures more skinny than Calista Flockhart, and can't be found on the star-maps. Yes, you guessed it: Kamino!
Its architecture combines the "art-deco" feel of Alderaan and the dark, brooding feel of Qo'nos. Dark, brooding and elegant!! Now, can I demand more from a planet's architecture??

these are some really good responses to what was a dead thread.
it is kind of sad to realise a good thread like this was dieing.
this one has had more than 1000 visits to it.
i'm glad i have brought it back to life.
I had a feeling that not all of the Star Wars world's architecture had been considered.
thanks for inserting Kamino's and Kashyyyk's pics.
you forget so quickly what these worlds George has created look and feel like.
lets take this tread beyond Star Treck vs Star Wars.
what other Sci-fi worlds that are cool are out there?

If I understand correctally Alderaan was devistated in places during the Clone War. This might explain the look of Alderaan in the picture(if it is the ANH version) as the city might have been rebuilt.Gil Hamilton wrote:Hershey Pennsylvannia is hardly what I'd call cosmopolitian, you know. After checking out some more about Nar Shadda, I'm actually now seriously thinking about voting for Nar Shadda. As for other sci-fi architecture, there's the Eternal Vortex in Zardoz and Mongo from Flash Gordon...

You can still live on Alderaan, it's just really hard.RayCav of ASVS wrote:My home planet of Corellia. I'd like to live on Alderaan but incase no one noticed it's not exactly possible anymore
Anyway I voted for Cardassia, something about Cardassians and their philosophy appeals to me.
