Your views on the pope

Guess what the pope's a fundie and what do we think of fundies?
That's right total assholes.
Herr Benedict has already proven his worth as the propagator of most of the vatican policies the last decade.
He has silenced internal vatican debate.
He has underplayed the role of priest pedophiles.
etc
Luckily for us most catholics are hypocrites and don't live by the dogma of the vatican.

Being a creationist is not a prerequisite of being a fundie. Ratpope spews the same anti gay, anti secular, anti reason, anti birth control, anti divorce rhetoric of a million fundamentalist arseholes. He wants to take back europe in the name of christianity, and considers a secular society an enemy. He's a cunt.

Never confuse fundamentalism with pure idiocy (though they are very similar).

Re: Your views on the pope
You missed the ginormous flamewar that resulted as a result of JP ver 2.0.0 shoving off and the ascension of "eggs" Benedict XVI.Ford Prefect wrote:I've always wanted to know what people thought about the pope. So go ahead, tell me what you think.
Generally, the views tend towards the Pope being a douchebag at the head of an institution that protects and implicitly acknowledges the pedophiles in its ranks. JP ver 2.0.0 and his successor are both extremely reactionary and dogmatic, and the teachings of the reactionary and dogmatic organization they head has certainly contributed to the AIDS problem in Africa, for example.

Yes, according to the prophecy, he's the second-to-last pope ("the Glory of the Olive"), the last one being "Peter the Roman"

Most definitions of the word "fundementalist" do not encompass the pope.Being a creationist is not a prerequisite of being a fundie. Ratpope spews the same anti gay, anti secular, anti reason, anti birth control, anti divorce rhetoric of a million fundamentalist arseholes. He wants to take back europe in the name of christianity, and considers a secular society an enemy. He's a cunt.
Historicly a fundementalist was a minimalist Christian who held to the five basic essentials of the Christian faith - inerrancy of scripture, deity of Jesus, substitutionary atonement, resurrection of Jesus, and the second coming. The pope tends to bring far too much baggage and a good bit of Vatican II is anti-fundementalist.
Anti-secularism is not inherent to fundementalism, most of the early fundementalists were pro-secularism as they had no wish to be ruled by a non-fundementalist theocracy. Today the position has reversed, largely because in the US they can leverage huge amounts of political power.
Birth control is accepted by many fundementalists, by and large that is a Catholic and Mormon thing that is held by fundementalists and non-fundementalists alike.
As a general rule Catholics are not fundementalists, barring Traditional Catholics and other breakaways, but that in no way precludes them from having moronic opinions and positions which Pope Palpatine has in number.
Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.
Yes, fundie in the sense I was using it does not refer to the schismtastic specific branch (of the baptists, iirc) of christianity, but to the rabid, impenatrable by reason zealots, as the word tends to mean on the internet. Muslim fundies to atheist fundies, to trek fundies to the pope, they're all fundies, they're all unreasonable and I hate them all.

I don't think he named himself for that, most of those types of prophesies are considered a sin by the Church
He probably had several other Benedicts in mind.
I’m not sure about Benny 16 yet
He seems to be more of the same doctrinally especially when it comes to the ordination of woman and the twisting and turning regarding the distinction between Natural family planning and artificial family planning. But that is to be expected; an organization doesn’t get that big or last that long but making frequent changes.
As inquisitor he came out strongly on the side of evolution and rationality
And there will be no change in the position on subsidiarity...all good things
Unfortunately it seems that he won’t give the ever-smug American Traditionalist the smackdown they need
And despite the rhetoric he seems intent like his predecessor to continue to try and roll back at least the spirit of Vatican II
And to those of you who mentioned child abuse, you should be smart enough to know that is not how the organization works. The actions of JPII were quite strong against the bishops within the limits of his authority. Expecting him to get involved in a diocesan matter would be the equivalent of holding President Bush accountable for the actions of a county sheriff or a state trooper; that would be the Governor’s headache.
The hats can be cool though

No. The evidence around the time of his ascension points to exactly what I said. Of course, you will not use the archive board to check this, you will assume you're right, and stick your fingers in your ears.Jarl Sven wrote:I don't think he named himself for that, most of those types of prophesies are considered a sin by the ChurchSirNitram wrote:Have we touched on the doomsday cultist facet of Benedict?

*sigh*..What's sad to me is that this orgnization is so screwed up. It's so different looking at the Church now compared to when I was younger.
Mike was dead on in his essays regarding logic and how people all THINK they are that way but still don't know a fiddler's fuck about it in truth. Through major inspiration derived from this site and the natural results of applying it to pseudoscience bullshit and religious tomfoolery, I've had the "veil" lifted from my eyes and I see the truth and it HAS set me free.
I can understand being deluded by religion, but what gets me is the intensity of the people who are fundies. I would wager that most people like myself are/were religious in thought, but only to a point that they drew their own lines regarding what they REALLY thought was right or wrong.....In most cases things were not happening in a truly challenging way to the faith on a daily basis, so it was unnecessary to have to continually examine faith in the light of reason or common sense. This would of course..weaken it.
So the ones that are rabid believers, and obviously the Cardinals and the Pope of the church MUST be, are a true mystery to me. They are obviously not idiots in the sense of low intelligence as they have to be diplomatic and play the appeasement game with science, but still they manage to put the belief in their faith as HAVING to be supremely true first. It baffles me.
Of course they are going to continue to be patriarchal. The Bible literature condones it.
Of course they are always going to be essentially anti-gay because since the Bible call it "unnatural", it HAS to be no matter WHAT science says currently....no matter HOW many animals in nature demonstrate it. They sugar coat it as best they can making it look like a "challenge" to be overcome so YOU aren't evil, just your innate desires and what they would lead you to do.
Ultimately there is no winning, coercing, adapting or moderating truly possible with anyone who is REALLY a Catholic because it's quite clear these things are condemned and therefore irrevocably wrong. No matter WHAT empirical or scientific evidence shows, it's irrelevant. The basic tenets of the Bible MUST be correct to them or it would be a flawed book and religion.
Hello? Will anyone in that camp ever start to wake up and realize the smell of the coffee regarding that last statement?
Ultimately there is very little co-existing with religion in our true future. Eventually it has to be dismantled and exposed. If there is real truth to any of it, it will stand the test of time and be evidenced. If not then it is llike seperating the wheat from the chaff. If it's not verifiable, toss it. We'll all be better off.

You have to realize that most Christian "moral values" behaviour is not really about "protecting" anyone; it's about their desire to send a continual stream of messages of condemnation towards people whose existence offends them. - Darth Wong alias Mike Wong
