RotJ: The Infinites vs. EU(Spoilers)

Post by SAMAS »

The Infintes was a series that explored various "what if" scenarios during the original trilogy.

In the Return of the Jedi version, at the end of the story, Han was blinded, Threepio got blown up with Jabba, and Anakin turned back to the Light Side, along with his children. However, Palpatine managed to escape, with the Skywalkers swearing to hunt him down.

How do you think the various events of the post-RotJ Expanded Universe would've played out from there. I could possibly see Palpatine making Thrawn and Pellaeon his military commanders, and possibly appointing Mara Jade as his new apprentice.

The Dark Jedi Master Jerec is, AFAIK, the most likely candidate for replacement apprentice, though his ambition might put Palpatine off.

No. GADM Thrawn has a mapping mission that'll continue unabated in the Unknown Regions. Pelleaon is a captain and an executive officer aboard some anonymous Star Destroyer. Mara Jade is a useful assassin and servant. Inquisitor Jerec is tapped to replace Lord Vader as Sith Apprentice.

While we're on Infinites have they put out any for any of the Prequels yet?

Agree with Pelleaon, disagree re: Thrawn. Thrawn was out there IIRC for political reasons; his tactical prowess had been proven beyond any reasonable doubt, hence his being a Grand Admiral at all. If anything, between the survival of a figure of great authority for the Empire, and the defection of a major military figure, I could see the war stretching out quite some time... The Empire might sue for peace after the Emperor is killed (this would be quite a job. The Emperor knows the Rebellion now has at least two, possibly three extremely capable Force users, and would defend himself accordingly... until he has another trap to spring. ) but before then I don't see Palpatine going quietly into the night.

Thrawn will not be brought back to be the Supreme Commander; there is no reason he suited to the role Vader was playing before. Moreover, Palpatine is acutely aware of Mitth'raw'noroudo's ideological and political differences with himself.

I suspect he got sent out to the UR not because it was some secret deal planned by him and Palpatine, but because he actually did get flushed in court politics as suspected. Think about it. The only rational position is that the Unknown Regions are unexplored because there's almost nothing fucking there. The Chiss are severely technologically regressed. The Unknown Regions where Mara and Luke searched for Zonama Sekot contains fewer systems than the entirity of the Chommell Sector where Naboo is.

Sedriss and the former Shira Brie are more likely candidates for the role of apprentice, if you ask me. Especially Sedriss seems to be totally devoted to Palpatine.
Jerec, while very powerful is to ambitous and Palpatine already has to take care to prevent him from gaining to much knowledge.

As for SupremeCommander, Thrawn isn't the only Grand Admiral. I would rather think Osvals Teshik or Grant would be put into that position.
The optimist thinks, that we live in the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist is afraid, that this is true.

True but that didn't stop him with regards to Dooku, and indeed he planned for just how to use him, so power and ambition won't necessarily rule one out. If anything, having Jerec would be useful since he's quite powerful and Palpatine's going to need that with Anakin and Luke gunning for him. Remember by the time of RotJ, Anakin definitely has no love for Palpatine at all. Even in RotS we see he wants to off the ol' bastard; now Anakin's had 20 years to nurse a grudge, realize he's been duped, and generally ruminate on what a bad decision it was. And he's coming for him.

I think the Emperor was so keen on replacing Vader simply because his web of lies collapsed and he knows Vader is going to be looking for revenge.

I didn't like that too much either, but the comic format is limited by what it could show. "How can we visually present a redeemed Darth VAder when we only have less than a page to do it."

"Make his suit white?"

"Jesus, that's fucking terrible."

Three hours later.

"All right, we;ll go with the fucking white suit."

Maybe because the Infinities are just about the worst SW comic stories ever.
