No it won't. Cortosis in Jedi Outcast never caused your lightsaber to shut off. Ever.

Cortosis weapons and armor can be found all over the place in SW Comics:
1. The weapons that the IG 100 Droids probably originanted with the Cortosis weapons of the Mogakai Warrior is SW: Comics. They wielded a very similar pole weapon, with with force field enhanced cutting blades on the ends. These guys were first introduced as opponents for Qui-lan Vos and Ayla Secura. But later reappeared as an army of evil Sepperatist clones!
2. Darthmir Nightsister have been shown to wield sword, made of Cortosis. From the Darth Maul comic. The sword was energized, a force field maybe? or vibro enhancement.
3. A bounty hunter fought Mace Windu with a Cortosis sword that was also field enhanced.
4. Qui-lan Vos wore Cortosis arm guards, during his duel with master Tholme. He intentionally blocked Tholmes blade with his arm, shorting out his former master's blade.
All of the times I've seen it used in the comics there is some kind of energy or field effect associated with the blade weapons at least; not the armor of pole weapons.

You're right. I was making it up.Cykeisme wrote:No it won't. Cortosis in Jedi Outcast never caused your lightsaber to shut off. Ever.
Perhaps you need to play on Jedi Master. Whenever I fought the Reborns with Cortorsis armor it would sometimes cause the saber to shut down.

Just in case you didn't know, Jedi Master and Jedi Knight difficulty are identical, except a cvar (I believe it's "g_handicap") is set to 50 (limiting your maximum health and armor to 50).
For one thing, I've played through the game at ridiculous number of times, not to mention used "npc spawn" to continously fight Shadow Troopers.. I would have noticed if any such thing ever happened, as well as messed around with the SDK doing silly things. There is no discernible code anywhere in the C++ game DLLs that has anything about shutting the player's lightsaber off in the Shadow Trooper's entity functions.
Being silly and wondering if such a freakish feature could have escaped my notice, I popped by gamefaqs.com and pored over a few guides to see if the danger of Shadow Troopers shutting the player'slightsaber off was mentioned anywhere. No luck.
The only time your lightsaber might go off is when you go underwater (I guess Kyle didn't have Kit Fisto's saber modifications) OR if you block a Strong style attack using Fast, and the enemy knocks your lightsaber out of your hand when you attempt to block it... it shuts off simply because it's knocked out of your hand. Only the Shadow Troopers and Reborn Masters (red and purple) are capable of using the Strong lightsaber style.
Perhaps wishful thinking has colored your memories?

I also have played it a ridiculous number of times, so if there is nothing in the code like you say then something else very subtle is going on. The only thing I can think of is a weak attempt at a force choke by one of the shadowtroopers.Cykeisme wrote:

None here either.Being silly and wondering if such a freakish feature could have escaped my notice, I popped by gamefaqs.com and pored over a few guides to see if the danger of Shadow Troopers shutting the player'slightsaber off was mentioned anywhere. No luck.
No, it's none of those. Those are VERY obvious. You'd have to be blind not to tell the difference. Whatever is happening is very subtle. I believe you because; 1) I know nothing about computer code. 2) I can't find it mentioned in any guide. 3) Other sights have said the same thing you have. Perhaps. I'll be playing through the shadowtroops just to double check. Everytime I fight them, this happens. (Including the first time)Perhaps wishful thinking has colored your memories?
Like I said before the only thing that it could possibly be is a quick force choke. They apply and immediately let go.

You're right, Force Grip- your lightsaber turns off when you get gripped. That's probably what you mean.
You can hear the rumbling and Kyle gasping sounds play, even if it's a momentry Grip.. listen for those.

Well now supposedly you can "dial down" a lightsaber... what with all that talk about Youngling "training sabers."
And if you can dial them down, why can't you dial them up? Every so often some fan will start blathering about how "Sith crystals" make the "red blade stronger" or some crap.
I'd be fine with thinking that all Jedi always have their lightsabers on the "default max power setting" when ignited, but why couldn't they design a blade that's more powerful?
Also:
I thought the "saber off in water" thing from Jedi Outcast/Academy was Phriking stupid (pun intended, sorry!). They were just trying to suckup to TPM "continuity" obviously, that got discarded because the scene was never filmed. Until that deleted scene was revealed, sabers worked just fine underwater. I thought the Clone Wars reference was meant to finally put that rumor to rest, oh well.
The change in the games thus broke with established continuity within the Dark Forces series (sabers worked underwater in the previous games).
At least many mod makers aren't following Raven's lead and allowing saber use underwater in their maps.

Kyle Katarn probably just didn't seal his lightsabre off for some reason. Maybe the hilt design wouldn't let him.

Hrm, I can't remember when Kyle built the lightsaber he uses in Jedi Outcast. In Jedi Knight he was using the green lightsaber given to him. Perhaps he neglected to seal the latest lightsaber that he built?Kurgan wrote:The change in the games thus broke with established continuity within the Dark Forces series (sabers worked underwater in the previous games).
Until I find the time to play the games again (I'm planning to play every game starting with Dark Forces ) I won't be able to clarify this.
What did Obi-Wan mean by "the swamp shorted out my saber" in the theatrical cut of TPM? It sounded like they do usually work underwater, but he made some sort of a mistake due to his Padawanish inexperience.
Whatever the case, Kit Fisto flattened any ideas about lightsabers not working underwater (as an aside, what's the canonicity of the microseries?). At the very most, a lightsaber might require a simple addition/modification/calibration to make it operable when submerged.

Actually, as far as I've heard, training sabers are purpose built. No "dial down" for regular combat lightsabers.Well now supposedly you can "dial down" a lightsaber... what with all that talk about Youngling "training sabers."
