So in that respect, Minbari ships must at least be tougher if they survive the beams...

Just like the eldar Eclpise and Shadow cruisers of Battlefleet gothic which also have these three fin shape, though they actually are admitted to have designed as solar sails. then again, these ships are also fragile compared to other warhammar 40k ships. And built of Structure Tissue Paper (Tm). It's seriously fragile, perhaps the black star was a freak hit but they're too easly broken for me.

Shadow weaponry is, at the least, in the KT-range (Calcs done by Ted C place them at 250 KT/sec). This energy is focused on an area smaller than the frontal profile of a Narn Frazi fighter. If the 2 MT nuke was not a fluke, and the energy intensity involved easily cut through the Sharlin's hull (actually, the "Black Star" is actually a Shargotti-class), then those Shadow beams should've gone all the way through easily.Stormbringer wrote: So all that means is that Shadow weaponary isn't that impressive. I know the Minbari aren't uber-tough. Neither is the ISD. That doesn't stop people from sticking up for it when they think someone is underestimating it. If all we were interested in was "uber-toughness", we'd all be fans of far stronger sci-fi universes.
I only mentioned a few, I guess I will just put in my favorites
B5 cruiser: Warlock and minbari cruiser
ST cruiser: Klingon Vorhca and Romulan Warbird(TNG)
SW cruiser: ISD
other sci-fi: Mars Battlecruiser(BFG) and Eclipise(BFG)
I love common muti-purpose designs.

All the heavy cruiser type ships from HW/HW:C
Technically they are all battleships since they are the biggest combat ships other than carriers thoug
Taiidan Heavy Cruiser
Somtaaw Dreadnought-
Kushan Heavy Cruiser-
I like the Kushan one the most, since the Taiidan one looks ugly and the Dreadnought has less frontal firepower. The Dreadnough however can defend itself very well against fighters though

Why are so many voting for Star Destroyers?? Technically they're technically just particularly heavy escort ships - the Galactic Empire's REAL cruisers are twice as big as ISDs and are sighted several times in Dark Empire.
(However, the Allegiance-class might qualify as a light cruiser)
ONE of the meanest-looking cruisers are in my mind the Vengeance-class grand cruiser from Battlefleet Gothic. (and its variants)
(a Vengeance-class Grand Cruiser)
Although I never have seen "Galaxy Quest, I've seen several photos of the NSEA Protector and it looks quite great in my opinion.....
(The NSEA Protector - as I haven't seen the movie, I don't know what class it is)
When it comes to performance, however, I'm a little blank. One of the Vengeance-class variants, the The Avenger , comes to mind - it doesn't have any torpedoes or fighter bays but it's shooty as hell...
(on the other hand, it's not very versalite as its vast broadsides are its only offensive weaponry)

Of course, we have the ever classic ISD.
I would say the EA warlock, but the weapon placement bugs the hell out of me. Move a few turrets around though and we have one hell of a ship. Soa s it stands currently, the Omega Class is my Fav EA ship.
The Galactica is fugly as all hell, but still a mean looking ship.
hmmm.... more as the ycome to mind.

You know I love these three new Imperial cruisers since they show how Imperial shipbuilding changed from the early days of the Imperium on, and they also explain the look of the Chaos ships which look pretty different from modern Imperial ships yet are said to be old Imp ships most of which defected at the time of the Horus Heresy.ONE of the meanest-looking cruisers are in my mind the Vengeance-class grand cruiser from Battlefleet Gothic. (and its variants)
But there's one problem I have with these ships:
WHERE CAN I BUY THEM???
They don't seem to be available to public yet.

HMS Nike, from Honorverse is my favorite for high-tech sci-fi.
For mid-tech, I like the Corsair-class Frigate, but the Henry Morgan variant, not the modernized Anne Bonney type. The Ypres-class Battleship is good also (and before y'all start screming about battleships, it's only 510 meters long). A point defense system, 24 kinetic kill cannon, 2 missile bays (capable of firing 30 missile salvos each), 2 spinal lasers (roughly 70 meter barrels), and 2 particle cannon. It would be a very weak ship by SW standards, though, since it has 10 powerplants that provide a combined 129.4 megawatts.

I think the Vengeance-class can be bought by mail order.

It's David Weber's series based on the starship captain Honor Harrington. Fairly good, though the last book was more politically-based than military-based, apparently to set up a new war.Simon H.Johansen wrote:I hate going off-topic, but what the heck is Honourverse??The Dark wrote:HMS Nike, from Honorverse is my favorite for high-tech sci-fi.

I'm guessing he's just seeing the spectacular destruction without looking at the relative strength of ships and weapons. A lot of people over rate it because they don't really look at it the power.Dahak wrote:And what, exactly, makes you think that?consequences wrote:Honor Harrington really isn't that high-tech you know.
The Honor-verse is really just at the high end of the Low-grade powers.

I like the many Imperial models, but I think that the most elegent design (if certainly not the most effective) is the Sharlin class cruiser from B5. Honorable mentions go to the Constitution and its refit (which are described by the Klingons as being "battle cruisers").

The fact that megaton range warheads are serious threats to capital ships, the low accel for sci-fi(5-600 Gs is pretty low key), the slow FTL speeds, the lack of long range ftl communications, and the inability to destroy a planet in a single shot. Honor Harrington is the least powerful universe that Weber has created.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
