Ep III videogame and Fleshing out the story

Post by Stravo »

I just finished the Ep III vidoegame on PSII last night. There were some really cool moments in the game that I think would have been awesome to see on screen - granted there was a strict time limit - and let me list some of these for you.

The Anakin Conversion scene has Anakin doing more than just cutting of Mace Windu's hand. They actually duel and it is Anakin who ends up killing Mace as he buys Palpatine's story of a Jedi uprising hook line and sinker. The betrayal that Mace feels and then his resolve to kill Anakin would have made for great drama in the movie and may have eased those who felt the conversion was 'off' somehow. This makes Anakin's conversion more dramatic than just him sitting there.

The Purge of the Jedi Tempe - here we have a full on assault starting off with Anakin killing the Librarian and then taking down a horde of young Padawans that come leaping out of the library stacks. Next we have Anakin laying the smackdown on some more powerful Jedi and finally taking on the Jedi saber instructor and his apprentice. Good stuff and there are some nice lines from the instructor. We also see neat little things like Anakin lifting a massive statue with the Force and using it like a battering ram to bring down the doors leading into the inner sanctum. As effective as the scenes of the purge were in the movie it still left a sense that the Jedi went out like bitches in the temple.

Mustafar - Anakin takes on the Separatists security forces and cuts a bloody swath through them as he makes his way to the leaders huddling behing their blast doors. I felt the fillm depicted it far better in the sense that Anakin shows up and just slaughters them before they can react but once again it was just cool watching Anakin cutting loose.

Many of these "Wouldn't it be cool." things all sort of stem from my gripe about Anakin after turning dark. There is no sense that he really is more powerful in the movie. Aside from yellow eyes and willingness to kill is there anything more we see from Anakin that we haven't seen from him as a lightsider? The videogame shows Anakin truly cutting loose and even gives him force lightning (it was fun toasting the saber master with my lightning and watching him writhe to his death) and I guess I would have liked to see more of that. When he says he can save Padme with his new powers all I could think was "What new powers? You're just Anakin with a hood and yellow eyes as far as this movie is concerned."

I recommend the game especially if you always imagined what it would be like to duel and cut people down but I would recommend renting it as it is rather short and not worth the current $49 price tag.

Too late for my brother... :) I told him he should wait, or at least rent it first, but Media Play was right next to the IMAX, and well...

Yeah, it was pretty good, but as you've said, very short-lived. Another warning: the co-op mode is very cheaply done. Rather than et two players go through the main story arc when applicable (which would've made for an excellent final level by pitting the two against one another) it's really just a string of four levels which don't really tie in with the main storyline in any signifigant way. The dueling mode was sort of nice, and the mini-games are decent, but asides from that, there's little else.

Oh, there is concept art, but I don't know how many of you will go for that - I really didn't.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.

I actully liked the movie version better, although it would be interesting to see Anakin take on Mace

One thing I will give the game is also how he kills the Librarian. He force pulls her onto his lightsaber. Also it has him raiding the library for information which fits fantastically with his seduction. Knowledge to save Padme.

That and the Grievous fight was better. The movie was too short for this supposed master killer of Jedi. Obi Wan is bad ass...sweet. Grievous is some overdone battledroid.

The Temple Purge, or at least elements of it, like Anakin tossing that statue and also the killing Cin Drallig (who's in the security holo in the movie) would've been good additions.

The lightsabre fight with Mace Windu would've been cool, but it would be adding yet another lightsabre fight to the movie ... as far as Anakin's conversion went, the novelization version, word for word, where Palpatine talks to Anakin after Windu has been killed, should've been put into the film. I thought it was very effective.

Yeah. I loved how in the novel, Anakin just starts making up justification for his decision after the fact, and all palpatine has to do is smile and nod along. Beautifully done.

I loved watching the Jedi Librarian die. Man did that bring a smile to my face. Don't ask. The game was fucking sweet. It's Jedi Power Battles II as far as I'm concerned, and it makes me even madder that there isn't one for AotC like there should be. Either way, it's sweet, The extended Grievous fight would have been cool. Had there been just one more sabre battle and then on.

I really think they should've put Luke Skywalker as a playable bonus character. Heck, they did it for Obi-Wan Kenobi and post-suit Darth Vader. God that was an awesome bonus level- they even included the video from ANH ... "I've been waiting for you Obi-Wan. We meet again at last."
