I'm got some spare money to buy one of these games. Which one is the best pick?

I'm assuming you've played Shadow Hearts (the first game), right? Then you'll probably enjoy SH Covenant. My wife is playing the game and seems to like it well enough.

But.....

I have a friend who's playing through X-Men and absolutely loves the game.

They're both good....so uh......dunno. :?

Have never played Shadow Hearts.

Just found out EB has both of them for cheap, so I think I'll grab them both :D

I would go with X-Men, that is one hell of a great game, the graphics suck but every thing else makes up for that.

Covenant is a very good game, and quite long. If you're picking up both SH and SH:C, a very minor spoiler (more a note on continuity than a spoiler, really).

Covenant assumes you get the bad ending from the original game

BTW, a third Shadow Hearts is due to be released relatively soon, entitled Shadow Hearts: From the New World. It's technically the fourth game in the series, since there's one before Shadow Hearts called Koudelka, which was for the original PS. I've never found a copy of it, though.

X-Men Legends is very well made, fairly true to the source material, interesting concept, some great cutscenes(Blob fighting naval officers with M-16s and the freeing of Magneto, not to mention the fact that they made failure cutscene once you get to the last episode) but its also VERY repetative, its basicly you running around fighting the same 3 guys per level over and over again for 20-60 minutes. But then again it Colossus picking up wolverine and throwing him at an enemy.

I played through it in single player then played multiplayer and didn't enjoy multiplayer as much although if you have some good people with you it can rock(just like with Rebel Strike my friends sucked at it)

SH:C is one of the top RPGs of this generation.

Pros:
Unique combo system
Very good story (though the ending isn't good)
Great CG
Characters are FUN! Not that BS "Oh, I'm an angsty teen, plz someone help me!"
Sidequests are great. I mean REAL dungeons for sidequests not "Dodge the lightning bolt 900 times" or "Race the goddamned chocobos while birds try to kill you". These sidequests really flesh out the story and the characters. The Dollhouse is creepy as fuck. Probably even moreso than SH's Dollhouse and that was scary.

Cons:
Ending sucks. SUCKS BALLS. BALL SUCKING BADNESS! It's probably on par with FFX's ending in terms of suckitude.
Relatively easy.

I dunno...while it wasn't in any way, shape, or form a happy ending...I thought it was good. Eh...each to their own, I guess, I can't really say why I liked it, just that I did.

Any ending that utilizes that...plot hole...is a bad one in my eyes. I have the same critique of FFX's ending as well. I want an ending that justifies me playing 50 hours with the characters, not one that trivializes it.

Have you seen both endings? If they're true to form, only one is the "real" ending (if you've played SH you'll understand).

Yeah, I've gotten both ending. Saved it right before I had to make the choice and fought the last boss.

Both sucked. I like the "bad" ending a little better since it gives hope that Yuri will be okay. I hate the "good" one because it completely trivializes everything I did in SH1 and SHC, as if it never really happened.

I haven't worked my way through SH:C yet but that's mostly because I've been pre-occupied with addictions to other games and thus really haven't given it a fair shot yet.

X-men Legends can be a real blast with friends around though (especially when coordinated.. nothing like getting the 'COMBO!' announcement six times in rapid succession. :D )
