Not everybody hates Dark Empire. I for one enjoy it a lot. But people who don't like it often feel that it cheapens several aspects of the films.

Everybody hates Kevin J. Anderson because he's a hack writer with no personal imagination or creativity.

For DE: Except for many stupid things in it, like the Jedi Tree (DEII) and "Wankatine", what upset many people was the premise that the Emperor managed to have his soul escape from the Death Star. Somehow, it cheapened Darth Vader's sacrfice. Then there was Luke turning to the Dark Side, and some people seem to think he had passed the trial in ROTJ, so he can't possibly find a reason to fall into it again. He should have charged Palpy (and get zapped).

I liked Palpatine's resurrection. I thought he went down too easy. Could you expand upon what you said about KJA? Perhaps some particularly offensive examples?

I, for one, like KJA.

Everyone says he's a hack and sucks balls as a writer, but honestly i think he's pretty good.

I never noticed anyone disliking Dark Empire, and again i personally liked it so i cant imagine why, but surely some do.

Some KJA offences:

1. Death Star?! Moon sized planet destroying battle station?! Bah! I'll design the Sun Wanker I mean Crusher, with invincible armor, that can destroy entire solar systems!!!

2. Luke Skywalker? Most powerful Jedi?! Bah! I'll make Kyp Durron, who's even stronger than Luke!!!

3. Lightsabre?! One crystal? Bah! I'll make a lightsabre with *three* crystals, and it can be as long as a lance!

I have a love-hate relationship with Dark Empire. I loved it in that it was entertaining. Lots of action and badass characters, etc. Fun read. Even the "unconventional artwork" sort of hooked me in for its novelty.

I hate it because it has the "well they had these incredible powers/weapons ALL ALONG but forgot to use them until now" crap, the parade of EU cliches (new super weapons, new lost Jedi, new dark side uber menaces) previously seen. Plus the "resurrection" of certain characters in a contrived manner either to appease fanboys (Boba Fett) or to try to mirror the OT (Palpaclones) and just general wank-tech (dark side powered mutant rancors? soul powered droid fighters?).

The whole "tainting of the saga" is a weakness of much of the EU unfortunately, so I consider it par for the course rather than a specific weakness of DE itself. That's my opinion anyway.

Of course all of this fun silliness was created before the prequels, so it might read a little differently now, but I don't own it. It's like I imagine reading the Thrawn Trilogy now would be very different than when I first read it back when it came out in the mid-90's.

KJA has a tendency to take boring minor characters and spend too much time on them, often to the deteriment of more interesting ones. He's also the master of anti-climax and disappointment. He has some fun ideas, but they just don't execute very well on the page. Ditto what Vympel said. ;)

I liked some of KJA's books like Darksaber. Any of them that are particularly hated? And someone more powerful than Luke was bound to come up sooner or later. And didn't Darth Maul's lightsaber have two crystals?

And in DE, Palpy said that it was a pity they didn't come up with the galaxy gun years ago (read: instead of DS I and II).

If Palpatine was shown to have all these super duper weapons in the OT movies before all these books and comics came out I'm sure we'd be more forgiving, but they just smack of "we pulled this out of our collective a$$e$ because they are "kewl" and one-up the saga).

I was really let down by Darksaber. It was cool at first, then really disappointed me. I see that I wasn't alone in thinking it sucked because of that. ;P

Other than that I read the Jedi Academy Trilogy, but that's the extent of my experience with Mr. Anderson that I can recall.

For some strange reason I’m imagining a gay man saying that in the stereotypical manner.

(I have nothing against homosexuals it’s just how I imagine someone saying that)

Actually, I have two more words:

Blob. Racing.

One of the multitude of ridicuous ideas KJA came up with, and that doesn't include his obsession with stupid puns/bad word jokes and wholesale ripoff and repackaging of concepts from the movies. Morth Doole anyone?

Daala the worst Admiral in the entire fleet.

Fleets of Destroyers that get blown up by a few snub fighters.

Super weapons all over the place.

Kyp Durron.

Same with all the EU, even the most avide haters will momentarily suffer amnesia to their prejudice if it suits them. Hardly suprising.

As KJA, his stories are over the top, and his concepts are derivitive, but I do like some of his works, namely certain parts of Jedi Academy, the Illustrated Guide, and even the IG-88 short story.

The first DE comic isnt bad but over all the whole thing (DE 1, DE2 , and EE) takes place over to short of a timespan, it should have been made to take place over the period of a few years, in other words, start off when it did but then continue and occupy the timespace that KJA's crap series took place in.

I like the DE series -- I don't like how it ended. Seemed rushed (because it was) and it didn't seem to fit together. Meh, but the artwork and the new ships we saw certainly caught my eye.

KJA, well just read Darksaber.

Gee, could that be because suspension of disbelief doesn't care one whit for taste? It doesn't matter if someone LIKES an aspect for them to understand that it happened. It takes a contradiction for something to be tossed aside, not a dislike for it.

Seize him!

But really, Jar Jar was a over the top character, but his reputation has been FUBARed over the years by those who are determined to decry the PT at all costs. His character was out of place and to goofy, but he by no means deserves the hatered he is given. Its a type of herd syndrome to hate him, prevelant amongst most SW fans.

Jar Jar was a missed opportunity. He should have played a larger part in ROTS. He had potential, in the hands of the right storyteller, to make audiences feel for him in light of his goofiness in TPM should he fall in with the bad guys in AOTC or ROTS, and have him martyred in his bid to redeem himself, perhaps even killed by Anakin.

Nothing too elaborate just a scene or three a movie that develops the character (as opposed to him acting goofy ad nauseum through out the entire trilogy).

I didn't really like Dark Empire because there was so much missing, story-wise. A graphic novel can only do so much that a novel can do better, but I did enjoy the various pictures. I also really hated that Veers got demoted to a fucking army captain. He was one of my favorite Imperials from the movies.

Much of the KJA books aren't that bad, but they aren't that good either. It seemed like much of his material was a copy cat, not a whole lot of originality. One of his better ones, I thought, was Dark Saber. Sure it had lots of crappy stuff, but I did enjoy seeing the warlords bicker and attack each other.
