TOKYO (AFP) - Japan has taken a step into the science-fiction world with the release of a "robot suit" that can help workers lift heavy loads or assist people with disabilities climb stairs.

"Humans may be able to mutate into supermen in the near future," said Yoshiyuki Sankai, professor and engineer at Tsukuba University who led the project.

The 15-kilogram (33-pound) battery-powered suit, code-named HAL-5, detects muscle movements through electrical-signal flows on the skin surface and then amplifies them.

It can also move on its own accord, enabling it to help elderly or handicapped people walk, developers said.

The prototype suit will be displayed at the World Exposition that is currently taking place in Aichi prefecture, central Japan.

Japan has seen a growing market for technology geared toward the elderly, who are making up an increasing chunk of the population as fewer younger Japanese choose to start families.

A government report last week showed that pensioners made up a record 19.5 percent of the country's population in 2004 and that the ratio will grow rapidly, surpassing 35 percent in 2050

I'd rather have one come with a bodysuit designed by Izubuchi. And built-in Rocket Punch, so I can be a superpowered vigilante. :P

How long until we have working 10-story robots? In principle, it seems we could do it right now with this technology.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Robots do not scale well. This goes quadruple for humanoid ones. Powerloaders, however, are badass. Powerloaders with bulletproof armour plating are inevitable. Then you just need to design a heavy weapon for one so it can bridge the gap between 'Soldier' and 'Light tank'....

I'm silly.

No 10 story robots. Just a one story mech for now.

GE made something the inspired the powerloader from Aliens back in the '60s. Problem was, the hydraulics would likely tear your limbs off.

If you mean 'all we need to do now is change the fundamental nature of the universe', you're right: we're one step away from viable high performance military mechs! :D

It's funny that a thread about something to assist labourers and cripples gets instantly derailed into ridiculous, teenage nonsense like '10 storey r0b0tzors!!!111'. I actually think this technology is useful in all kinds of interesting ways: very few of them have anything to do with 'bAttletech r0xx0rs'.

It was a bloody joke  .

Hell, i hope that by the time these things become commercially available we wont even have humans in wars, only drones.

One of the fundamental guidelines of advanced technology is that it should under no circumstances be named 'HAL'. That's like being a door-to-door pie salesman ringing the doorbell at a clown college.

Can anyone else envision a massive upgrade to that Battle-Bots show?

In truth I don't even thinkj it really counts as a "powered suit" or 'bot. More of a power-assist exoskeleton. The military applications are, however, obvious.

DARPA's way ahead of you there, but this exoskeleton was only ever meant for helping people like my mother, a nurse, than getting soldiers to carry bulky loads at high speed.

DARPA was working on a exoskeleton to assist with the carrying of heavy loads, IIRC. It was just a pair of legs with a shelf on the back for a rucksack-- saw a picture of it once and never saw it again.

It made me think of Wallace & Gromit's "The Wrong Trousers"!

They have that as a light suit, yes. But there are others in the works such as a heavy one which is essentially a powered EOD suit.

Linky.

That's a PowerPoint presentation on the concepts so far.

Or perhaps 40 kg anti-tank rifles.
