The best mods are :

A-, B-, X-, and Y-wing
The three TIE's (fighter, bomber, interceptor)
Corvette
DSII (more for novelty value - it's the biggest ship in the game)
Lambda shuttle
MF
ShippackA (a collection of high-quality Rebel and Imperial cap ships)
Slave I

I'd also recommend NanoFX 2.0b (general graphics improvements) and the MPE (look for the Bridge Commander SDK - the MPE is included with it, you can use it to tweak your ships)

EDIT : there's also an SSD being ported - the current one is a bit crap - and I believe someone was working on an ISD bridge, though all bridge projects are currently on hold.

I wish I had gotten a screenshot of a R:TW game at a LAN where one of my flaming heavy onager shots nailed one of the enemy generals... Right in the face. I swear to god - the shot nailed him right in the face. It was fucking hilarious...

HW2 with the PDS mod ... a squadron of battle frigates and Kopesh corvettes harassed an enemy battlecruiser and knocked out its engines while one of my own battlecruiser snuck up behind. The enemy sent a carrier in but it came under the guns of my BC
