ANH ROTS nitpick

Post by Stuart Mackey »

"Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldnt allow it"

We know from the DVD of ESB that Vader does not know he has a son untill Palpy tells him. Anakin never asks Obi to give his sabre to his son in ROTS.
A Lucas whoopsie or do we just say that thats what Obi thought that the 'good' Anakin would have wanted before his untimely 'death' at the hands of that apprentice Darth Vader?
Or is Obi going senile in his solitude?

Dude, just about everything else Obi-Wan told Luke about his father was a lie. You think he wouldn't tell one more fib? :P

It's just another one of Obi-Wan's self serving lies, which I'm sure he'll rationalize after the fact to be "well, Anakin would've wanted Luke to have it if there actually had been a young apprentice of mine called Darth Vader who betrayed and murdered him." because of "point of view".

I think you interpreted that scene all wrong. Vader was tearing the galaxy apart for Luke long before Sidious made his little courtesy call. Vader's "how is that possible?" was just playing along.

Or he wanted the force user that screwed Tarkins wee toy? In the Films and in EU {SotE} Vader does not know untill told.

How can 1996 SotE support an interpretation of something that was added in the DVD release but a year ago? Vader wasn't told by Palpatine in the original that Luke was his son, it was taken as fact: "the son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi." with no response from Vader. I find it extremely unlikely that someone strong in the Force by the name of Skywalker blew up the Death Star and Vader seriously thought it was anyone else besides his son.

The opening crawl of Empire made it clear that Vader was obsessed with finding Skywalker, plus his conversation with Ozzel later underscores this:

"THAT is the system. And I'm sure Skywalker is with them. Set your course for the Hoth system!"

The rebels were just incidental
"Of course, what would really happen is that in Game 7, with the Red Sox winning 20-0 in the 9th inning, with two outs and two strikes on the last Cubs batter, a previously unseen meteor would strike the earth, instantly and forever wiping out all life on the planet, and forever denying the Red Sox a World Series victory..."

Actually, you are correct about SotE, it adds nothing. The DVD of ESB makes it clear. Moreover you are correct about me misinterpreting it, and gravly so , I rewatched it and the discovery of the sheild generater on Hoth.

Vader to Ozzel: "...That is the system, and I am sure Skywalker is with them. Set your course for the Hoth System."

Palpy: "The young rebel who destroyed the Death Star, I have no doubt that he is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker"

Vader: "How is that possible?"

The movies dont say either way if Palpy knows about Luke before Palpys phone call in the asteroid feild. If so, how did Vader know about Luke, and not Palpy?
Was Kenobi sheilding Luke, perhaps?

He sensed his use of the Force and meditated on it until he realized who this young Rebel pilot was, perhaps? Or perhaps Rebel propaganda about the heroic Luke Skywalker got out, and Anakin simply pieced together the whole bit about being raised on Tatooine, the last freakin' name of Skywalker, and slapped himself on the head and said "holy shit, that crafty old bastard Obi-Wan, hid my own son in plain view!"

Yeah, point. I just found it curious that Vader would know before Palpy, who would be getting the same kind of Intell as Vader about the rebellion, one presumes.

Let's see if I can remember.. there's a comic featured shortly after the events in ANH. Luke was already somewhat famous then, as the DS killer, among fellow rebels at least. Vader was already under orders to find the rebels, and during this he found out more specifically about Luke. He immediately made the connection with the pilot he met at the DS, but IIRC, one can only infer that he thought about a relation, there's no direct evidence.

I'm guessing he at least thought Luke might be one of the few still living Jedi. On an unrelated note, a Dominator-class - that is, a gravity well star destroyer, not an Immobilizer - was also in the comic. It is simply called an interdictor by Vader. I thought this was earlier than they were supposed to exist.
Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Extralife style.

I think we've pretty much known this was one of Obi-Wan's "points of view" since RotJ came out and confirmed that Darth Vader was Luke's father. We could piece together that Anakin became Darth Vader before Luke was born, because otherwise there'd be no reason to hide a twin sister from him. So why would Darth Vader want his son to have the saber he used when he was with the Jedi Order?
Later...

Remember that on Endor Vader sensed Luke when the Emperor did not. Vader obviously has a deeper tie to Luke in the Force allowing him certain insights that the Emperor may not have.

As to the lightsaber deal, Obi Wan was whitewashing his freinds' past, almost believing his own lies about Anakin dying because as we see in ROTS Anakin did die for Obi Wan on the shores of mustafar. Obi Wan I think more for his own sake wanted to believe in the good Anakin being gone more than just lying to Luke. The lightsaber lie was more like wishful thinking on Obi Wan's part.

Of course that could all be seen from a certain point of view.

The ROTS novelization bears this interpretation out. Yoda actually tells Obi-Wan that this is the way he should view it. And Obi-Wan clearly regards Darth Vader as a completely different person than Anakin Skywalker. At the end, after deciding that he did not feel "merciful" toward Vader's suffering as he burned on the shores of Mustafar, he decided to protect and watch over Luke because it's what Anakin would have wanted. He already speaks of Anakin as if he were dead.
