Magnaguard questions

Post by NecronLord »

How many Magnaguard were produced?
Have they ever been seen to use ranged weapons?

Wasn't stated anywhere, I think

Nope, don't think so.

Thank me later!

They have used ranged weapons on occasion (Obsession #5, for one), although they're primarily intended to be Jedi killers.

They are the Confederacy's answer to ARC's and Jedi, numbers are supposed to be very low,
also their heirustic combat processors are supposed to be designed to learn Jedi\Melee moves, not blaster tactics.
(That's what SB droids & Droidekas are for)

Also isnt there a Gunray quote about each one of them costing enough to retrofit an army?

No, but they obviously survived combat with them, according to the novelization.

In the movie if I remember correctly, at least one Magnaguard had a slashed 'eye' I only noticed it after I'd gone back to see it again after reading the novelization.

Hrm, I do believe you're right. Will have to look out for it to confirm.

I'm guessing that particular MagnaGuard was one of those that went down to Coruscant to partake in Palpatine's "kidnapping".
The damage must have been inflicted by Shaak Ti during the festivities in the underground transit system, when she stayed behind to delay pursuit while two other Jedi escorted the Chancellor to the bunker. A good number of the MagnaGuards that engaged her withdrew mostly intact.

The Republic Commando game. Several Magnaguards were equipped with integral multiple launch missile launchers. This variant as well as a grenade launcher equipped one are mentioned in the ROTS: Visual Dictionary.

I meant the rocket launcher, iv'e played the game.
Also would you say that the droids are underpowered in the game compared to what theyre supposed to be capable of?

In the novelisation Gunray complains to Grievous that each one cost enough to refit an entire army. I haven't seen any mentionings of who or where, but it's stated they are designed to fight and survive if not kill a Jedi. The VD states that Grievous will not have the droids outer casing repaired to serve as a fear tactic. It used the one with the slashed eye as an example to this.

As to other sources I cannot say. I haven't read the EU novels yet, and I haven't played Republic Commando, so I can't say to what they contain. The Clone Wars cartoon shows a great deal of thier combat skills. However, Shaak Ti makes short work of them with her own weapon.

In Republic Commando (the game) magnaguards were a sonnuvabitch. They were like Ninja SBDs with more damage capacity, a fucking painful melee attack and those damn rockets.

Doh, how could I forget about the MagnaGuards' missiles in Republic Commando... I just re-played through the game last weekend.

I digress, but I somewhat dislike the design philosophy behind some of RC's gameplay mechanics.. to make certain enemies more difficult, they simply increased their durability (hit points, whatever). MagnaGuards and SBDs are two examples of this.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game and enjoyed it tremendously.

As a digression to a digression, I think the design of the Advanced Dwarf Spider Droids is great.. I wish those machines appeared in the movies.

Yeah, they kick ass in the microseries.
I suppose it should also be noted that Shaak Ti, Obi-Wan and Anakin have above-average combat abilities. I'm sure a lesser Knight or Padawan would fare worse.. perhaps much worse.

Hahaha Kurgan for the win again!
