I'm looking for a budget range laptop to take with me to Canada, so does anyone have any suggestions what I should look for, who I should avoid and so on?
I'll be mainly using it for writing and internet use, I'm not bothered about 3d gaming or the like.

You can pick up a decently optioned Pentium 3 Thinkpad refurbished for around $400-500 USD. Something around a T21 or T23 would probably work quite nicely for what you want. And it's a Thinkpad, so it's got a nice, rugged case (and the T20 on have a keyboard illumination LED, which is another nice bonus especially for plane trips when the lights are dimmed.)
Check half.com and ebay, both usually have good prices on them.

also suggest checking out someplace like overstock.com, they've got a sizable amount of adequate sub $1,000 laptops.

I'm getting my new computer from Aria.co.uk. You might have a quick look and see what they have in the way of laptops.

I like my Thinkpad as well, and I have been really happy with their tech support. My AC adaptor cord stopped charging the batteries and would not power the laptop. I filled out an online tech request. They called me back fifteen minutes later and a new AC adaptor came the very next day, no questions asked. I was very happy with them. You could also try the Dell Outlet store but I do not like them as much.
