"Typical security for escorting Trident subs might include two large tug boats, two or three police launches (one of which leads the procession with a blue flashing light), six special forces rigid inflatables (with armed soldiers) which seem to be almost glued to the sub, three on each side. Then there are any number of aquaplods whose role it is to keep us away. A recent defence security exercise at Coulport involving a sea action by Royal Marines succeeded in overwhelming the security"

As I said they have studied the matter quite well.

I have absolutely no respect for these assholes. Working for nuclear disarmament is one thing- albeit totally unrealistic- attempting to destroy the weapons the military uses in combat- especially a SSBN- whose SOLE PURPOSE is as deterrent, could be looked upon as TREASON.

Course she currently can't even take the weight of all her cannons. Most are now fiberglass replicas. If it weren't for that bomb in 1940 I'd expect she'd be in better shape though.

UK could have brought 430,000 M16's for what the A2 rebuild program cost and had them in a matter of months. Probably at least 200,000 G36's or SIG-550 as well.

The MOD did announce that there being replaced in 2006. But that this is merely bringing forward there "planned retirement". Right sure, the damn thing where expected to last till 2020..

However it sounds like there may be an L85A3. Hopefully they'll at least be new built. Though I really do hope for the sake of every British infantryman that they do the sane thing and buy the G36. After all H&K is a British company now.

Marine was likely afraid his life might acutally depend on a his rifle..

Two or three years ago IIRC. I know its is British owned but I can't recall the exact date. This was why in part H&K got the contract to rebuild the L85's.

I posted this thread subject at another board I frequent, and got this response from one guy who worked as a power engineer on a US Navy nuclear sub when he was in the navy. So it looks like the incident was not quite as serious as we all made it out to be, though in no case to be taken lightly. Of course, what he says applies to the US Navy, and I don't know how much of it (but most, I should think) applies to the Royal Navy.

Edi

Several issues of note:

A submarine in refit has many people going on and off it, mostly civilian contractors. While it was inexcusable for the security at the dock side to let them slip by, it is by no means some sort of super-screw-up of biblical proportions such that 10 terrorists, with whatever equipement, could do the same. Two caucasians, probably with no packages or tools, other than pliers or the sort expected for shipyard workers, waited until the guards were sufficiently distracted, walked across the brow (the bridge from dock to the boat), and entered the submarine.

When a submarine is in port, it is customary to maintain the hatch open. Typically, there is even a tent erected over it to keep the weather out, thus, once across the brow and onto the boat, it would be fairly easy for two men to enter the submarine. Once onboard, and while not actively doing anything close to sabotage, these two men avoided the attention of the night shift. They then activated the one piece of equipment they were familiar with, a fire alarm pull box.

As far as actions associated with repelling boarders, and details about operating a nuclear submarine, I'll leave that to your imagination and the fiction of Tom Clancy. While the lax in security is somewhat unexpected, considering the previous incidents, I am safe in the knowledge that a serious threat would have been more than adequately handled, even if 20 or so terrorists made it on-board. If I had 20 former sailors, and we knew the layout, knew the systems, and were intimately familiar with security measures, I wouldn't bet on my ability to forcibly take over a submarine. A pair of hooligans who got lucky only makes me concerned for their own safety. They could have tried to operate or damage something which could have maimed them, or been shot by a trigger happy watch-stander.

I rather hope they can get Victory back to a conditon that she can handle her own weapons again.

Costs too much, benefit too little- it's not like the Brits need fire support- and that's all a BB is good for nowadays.

Do you know what HMS Victory is?
She is/was the Flagship of Admiral Horatio Nelson. Victory's armament consists of or rather consited of, muzzle loading cannon. She is also made of oak. She is still in commission because she was Nelsons flagship at Trafalgar in 1805.

Well shit when someone mentions in the same sentence BBs like the Iron Duke and Queen Elizabeth, I just assumed it was a BB with a classic name.

Silly boy! There is and only ever will be one HMS Victory. As I said the worlds only remaining 100 gun ship of the line.

I wasn’t a quite direct hit, but in 1940 a 551-pound bomb landed in the dry dock amidships and blew at 40x40 hole in her side and destroyed a fair bit of the structure. Had there been a serious fire she would have been lost.

With so old a ship I dubt she'll ever leave her dock again. It was very hard to get Ironsides fit for sail again, and she was in much better shape to start with.

[reality] Doubt she could take three minutes action with a German F lighter or ten with a half decent MTB..[/reality]

Not good. To be honest, if the Brits do ever get the money to get the ship in sea worthy condition I doubt they would ever risk doing more than being towed from berth to berth. She is simply to valuble.
Edit} HMS Victory is being resored to her 1805 condition in time for the 200th Trafalgar aniverary, so hopefully she may well be in the water again soon.

Hey, the USN managed to get Constitution back to sea, I'm sure the RN can get Victory sailing once more.

Well of course it can be done, after all the ship is wooden, and does not present the same difficulties that steel ships have. But there is the question of money, and Victory is not fully funded by the government and reqires donations and funds from tourists to maintain her.

It's easier to get Warrior back at sea, I mean she was sailing about 25-30 years ago, is still afloat, might need new bottom hull plates, but would be MUCH cheaper than making Victory sea worthy.

Besides, HMS Trincomalee is being refitted to be sea-worthy, a frigate from 1815.

Err Warrior was a barge 30 years ago and had to be towed....
Victory just needs money, the rest is just a excersize in enginerring/shipbuilding and should not present too many difficulties.
