It seems good, but one simple thing would heighten my enjoyment immensly: Make every weapon 3-5 times more powerful or alternatively divide max health 3-5 times. I've never liked seeing people survive getting shot multiple times, but as games have become more realistic graphically, I've tolerated it even less. None of the character classes looked like they were wearing a whole lot of armor, so 1-3 shots to the body with an M16 should be lethal.

For anybody who wants to play with a few more weapons, you can enable some extra ones in single player (a new one for each class). Just do the following:
Open your BF2 directory
Open the folder python\bf2\stats\
Using notepad open the file unlocks.py
Go to line 44, which should contain "defaultUnlocks = [0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0]"
Change this to "defaultUnlocks = [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]"
Save and exit
Play singleplayer
Now you can use the Jackhammer, SA80, PK etc by clicking the little icon with an up/down arrow on it in the top right of the class icons in the class selection menu in the game. I've no idea if this screws up online play, but if you want to undo it all you have to do is revert the line of text you altered back to its original state.
Have fun.

It's probably lag. I'm telling you, if you hit someone in the head they will die. If you don't believe me start a single player game and shoot one of your teammates in the head at close range.Hamel wrote:Doubt it. Oh its a fun game though the AI right now varies in between brilliant to stupid
AI in tank-Brilliant
AI in Humvee-Stupid
AI Gunner in Humvee-Brilliant
AI Sniper-Stupid
AI Medics-Brilliant
Thats all the ones I've noticed so far, when I get back from work I'll try out those extra kit weapons because I can't play online(Satlite Internet means my lowest ping is 940)

Well, I've played a couple hours, and here are my thoughts:
Great graphics. The game play is just as good at the original. I do have a few gripes though -
The sniper rifle is inaccurate. I go prone, start squeezing off shots, and only about 1/5th of them hit. And this is on somebody who's AFK and just standing there, so it's not lag delay or me being a poor marksman.
Machine Gun - I'm in a tank and charge into the enemy base, take out a few guys, then my tank gets damaged. I'm forced to bail, and I run into an enemy soldier. I crouch and start blasting away at nearly point-blank, and like two shots hit out of 20. Then I die. I'm thinking hits weren't registering, because there is no way you can be that close yet miss that much.
Online Play - I didn't have a very good first impression. I know this isn't any fault of the designers, but I am never playing on a server with FF on again. I've played CS and DoD on servers with FF on before, and I've never gotten TKed as much as I did playing BF2. The very first game I joined was SWAMPED with Tkers - I couldn't even live for a minute before one of my teammate decided to gun me down, and punishing as far as I could tell, does nothing. They really should add options to have servers autokick players who TK too much in a certain amount of time, and have the punish player option do something visible, like slay the TKer, instead of whatever it does right now.
Lack of a quick switch button. I've gotten too used to it and can't shake the habit.
It looks promising, and I might get it when it comes out...

They have both of those. I was autokicked for shooting down two retards in an enemy helicopter (I shoot by IFF when it comes to dealing with air targets).Exonerate wrote:Online Play - I didn't have a very good first impression. No, lag isn't the problem. Two other people in this thread also have complaints about the sniper rifle. Seriously, I can make more kills as a spec ops on top of the crane than as a sniper, against people farther away.Kamakazie Sith wrote:It's probably lag. Yeah, if you can't hit someone standing still with 15ms lag, it's a useless weapon. SpecOps is so much better.
Sure, in singleplayer, if you manage a head shot, you can kill someone, but I have yet to see anyone reliably kill people online with the sniper rifle. I don't know if it's because of some freakish lag bug, but bullets shot at stationary targets through the sniper rifle do not hit, much less ones at moving targets. When the SAW is a better sniper rifle THAN THE SNIPER RIFLE, something is seriously fucked up.
Additionally, what the fuck is with the step back? I can see an overly powerful sniper rifle being bolt action for purposes of game balance, but this piece of shit? Fuck that. The only way I'd touch the sniper is to get the M82, which you can unlock (and the unlocked weapons, WTF?).

15ms? I have never even SEEN a server with that kind of connection. A curse on my nations laughable backbone.
I'm thinking of pulling it down, but I just want to know: for someone who thought BF1942 was terrible (technically, but I wasn't impressed with the design either) and has no patience for servers full of 14yo dickless morons (Joint Ops is so much fun on LANs, and the net is apalling), is it actually any different that other games of this type? What's the hook? I've read that it still has conefire, still has UT-style damage, etc, so ... is it just BF again, or what?

I have the same problem with the Sniper. I can't seem to hit anybody with it. They'll need to make some changes to that kit. I think that kit has enough problems without having to worry about the bullet not going where the crosshair is pointing.Hamel wrote:

Er, so far, basically, yes. I've played BF before, and this is pretty much just an enhanced version of it...Stark wrote:15ms? I have never even SEEN a server with that kind of connection. A curse on my nations laughable backbone.

Sadly the minimum specs are
CPU: 1.7 Ghz
RAM: 512 Mb
Video Card: NVidia GeForce FX 5700, ATI Radeon 8500 or ATI Radeon 9500 with 128 Mb of RAM
And sadly I do not have a 128mb graphics card

Like I said, my FX 5600 works pretty well. My brother has a worse computer than me, and at the lowest quality his works. I think he has a 2.8 Ghz, 512 MB, and a FX 5200. He has it going at the LOWEST of the lowest specs (the aircraft carrier deck is one solid gray slab), but it *does* run. Download the demo and see how it is...I was pleasently surprised.Praxis wrote:There goes my Geforce FX 5200 OC'd...InnocentBystander wrote:It's here!

I get killed by snipers online a fair bit, actually. And the Dragunov is sexy; it's the M24 that has the issues.Hotfoot wrote:Yeah, if you can't hit someone standing still with 15ms lag, it's a useless weapon. SpecOps is so much better.

Hmmm, okay, after further testing, the SVD is much superior to the garbage M24. 10 shots of semi-auto goodness, more or less identical to the one in DC. Decent killing power, and fairly accurate.
Having done several stints as a commander, I have to say, it's rather nice. Not nearly as taxing as being a commander for NS Marines, and pretty rewarding.
Command Structures can be destroyed and repaired like vehicles, except you can't permenantly destroy them, they stay there until they are repaired. However, if you slip a SpecOps into the enemy base, he can take out the artillery and buy your side some time.

Hm, question for anyone who's gotten a good look at it so far:
Often, the air combat is pretty thin for a variety of reasons so in my experience there's usually some aircraft available when I feel like flying. Recently, I was doing well in the Havok, having found a marginally-competant gunner and generally piloting it like one would *gasp* pilot a gunship. My friend, an infinitely superior gunner despite being a n00b, joined the game and we tried to get hooked up in either the Havok or Su-34, but at about that time we just started getting shredded contantly. Quite literally whenever I was in the Havok and in the air, 90% of the time was constant "MISSILE LOCK" despite the quickly-recycling flares, evasive maneuvering, intervening terrain FFS, no matter where I was on the map. Occasionally it was caused by an F-35, but it was mostly from Stinger sites from what I could tell. Two problems:
1. How the hell did the F-35s get consistent kills on me? Whenever I'm in a fighter, by the time I can spot, lock, and shoot at a helicopter I've already passed it, and on the rare occasions such a shot will hit, it simply drops flares or evades. If I drop my airspeed enough for it to matter, well, I tend to, y'know, crash.
2. How the hell did the Stingers, mostly located on the beach, maintain friggin' locks on me constantly? I was well beyond visual range and made judicious use of buildings and hill (like a real gunship). When I'm in a Stinger site, my range is a tad longer than visual range (around 200m in game terms, I think), but not near enough to lock (much less HIT) targets way over in the construction area or airfield.

I've had that problem too, getting pwned by F-35's. The few time's I've been in a Cobra, I've never been shot down by migs, only stinger sites. The stinger sites themselves are utterly useless against aircraft since 9 times out of 10 the jet will outrun the missile, lol.
The airpower is heavily biased in favor of the US team. The F-35 out-turns the Mig29 so bad it's ridiculous. Since I only ever get to play as MEC, because the US team is always stacked (silly patriots), I did manage to steal an F-35, and proceeded to completely own with it until I was forced to return to my airstrip to rearm, at which point I was promptly shot down by my own team *sigh*.
